I don't know what you have down there, but the pet stores around us do birthday parties. The kids get to play with the pets and learn about them, and the pet store animals get to come out and play and the store gets people in. Win Win! My daughter went to 2 pet store parties when she was 8 and loved it!

Picnic in a local park so the kids can play, have a BBQ, some cake and ice cream. I really don't like all those expensive indoor places. Our children don't get enough outside play these days.

How about your backyard? I'm serious.

One of the best parties we ever had was when I set up a bunch of games in the backyard, a water balloon toss, scavenger hunt, etc. My friend thru a similar party for her daughter, she made her own slip and slide by using a large tarp and the girls made thier own bathing suit coverups as a craft project.

For my daughter's 8th birthday party, we did a mall scavenger hunt. We met at the mall and divided the girls into two groups, Team Pink and Team Purple. Each team was given $20 to buy as many of their color item as they could, but only one item per store. Also, there were some bonus items, like perfume sample, that were worth fewer points. We ordered the pizza and cookie cake in the mall, so we didn't have to haul a lot of stuff in. It was fun and not too expensive.

On my dd's 7th, we had a swim party. We did the cake and decorations at the house and then drove the kids to the pool...that was very reasonable in terms of price because we didn't have to pay for the party room at the pool and we didn't have to lug all the gifts and cake either. We have an indoor pool fairly close by. We had the parents drop the kids off at our house and pick them up at the pool...that way we didn't have to get everyone showered and dressed. whew!

I am not sure how you define near :0) My 7 yo dd loved her party at Young Chef's Academy in Ft Worth. I loved it since the party cost less than Chuckee Cheese and I did nothing but enjoy the party.

My DD goes to ASI gymnastics and they do parties. Would be so fun! Love pump it up!
You could do the zoo, or if you want to have it at your house I know some really good clowns! They did a great job at my DD's 10th b-day party.
