We worked with a great Realtor. Janice Weiner with Re/Max Suburban, ###-###-####. She is very knowledgable in the area. Prospect Heights or Mount Prospect are close to Wheeling and very nice.
My husband just started a great job in Wheeling IL (NW suburb of Chicago), being that we live in Indiana it is quite a commute for him every day. We've decided to move closer to his work. We are empty nesters and are not too concerned with school systems or near parks or libraries. We are looking for a quiet neighborhood with a great deal of space between neighbors. We would like to have at least an acre or 2 of land. If there is such a property but it is a little farther away if it is close to the express way that is fine. I quess what I am asking is where is there a quiet spacious neighborhood for us older folks?
Thanks moms. I had been periodically going with my husband to wheeling. While he was at work I was looking at houses. Coming from NWI I didn't know how much taxes Illinoisins were forced to pay. WOW!!! The taxes on the homes in the NW suburbs of Chicago is in upwards of $8000.00 a year, and that is for a home smaller than mine!!! In NWI I am paying only $1200.00 a YEAR! My husband said there's no way we're going to pay more per month for taxes than we are for repaying the loan. I agree. We have put looking for a home on hold at this time. We have been pondering on the idea of finding a room to rent, or a small studio to rent for him to stay at a few days a week when the trip gets too much for him. Do you moms have any other solutions or know of anyone who is renting a room cheap? $400.00 a month.

You should look north at Long Grove, Lake Zurich and Kildeer. Good luck, we love our peace and quiet too!
I lived in Prospect Heights and I grew up here. There are lots and lots of empty nesters, and property has to be at least 1/2 an acre, which is different from all the other surrounding suburbs where the lots are much, much, much smaller. And we're right on the border of Wheeling.
I have a great realtor for that area - Barb Hibnick with ReMax Showcase.
Her cell is ###-###-#### or ###-###-#### or ____@____.com
I would recommend Cook county instead of Lake county - lower property taxes - but she specializes in the Northwest suburbs - give her a call or visit her web site.
Long Grove
Hawthorne Woods
Kildeer

All of these are more "upscale" types of communities with usually larger lots. The key is to try to stay in LAKE county as opposed to Cook county (they have higher taxes and lots of money gets funneled into Chicago)
It can get more expensive as you head East, towards the lake. But I don't know much about those communities/lots. I do know most of the "big named" towns on this map, East of Wheeling, and they all have very nice areas with pricey homes and more affordable areas too. The larger lots will cost more tho.
If I were you, I would NOT do Wheeling tho - just my 2 cents.
I guess it sort of depends on how far he's willing to drive and what your budget is.
For "a great deal of space" you might consider:
Long Grove, Kildeer, Hawthorne Woods (Northwest of Wheeling)
Lincolnshire & Riverwoods (North).
Lake Forest and Highland Park (East)
The only potential issue about living east of Wheeling is the traffic getting to Wheeling from there.
