Need Suggestions

Hi - my son is 19 months old. About a month ago, we casually started potty training him & just having him use his potty before his bath at night. All is well with that; however, he now likes to take his diaper halfway off (he can't figure out how to get the whole thing off) while he's sleeping or napping. He kinda wakes up & un-hooks one side & then will fall back to sleep. Needless to say, diapers don't work very well when they're only half on. So, I need some suggestions. For night time, I put him in a onesie with his jammie pants, and that's helped. But, what can I do for naptime if he's not wearing a onesie? Would Pull-up pants work? How absorbent are they?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated - changing his crib sheet all the time is getting old...thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I had a simular problem with my older son (now 3 1/3). He hated being dressed and would remove his pants and diaper every chance he had. A friend of mine suggested putting the diaper on backwards- harder to reach around and unfasten. It worked like a charm! Good luck!

What if you put the diaper on backwards? If it fastens in the back, could he still take it off???

You could put a diaper cover over his disposable diaper - the kind people use over cloth diapers. Some of them have snaps, and would be harder for a toddler to take off. They also come in some cute designs.

Hi,
I've been having the same problem with my 2yr old daughter, except she's getting her diaper ALL THE WAY off (!). For her, we realized it's a development milestone, so in one respect we're proud to see she can figure this out - even under 2 pajamas. OK, so what FINALLY worked for us was to put her diaper on BACKWARD and snug so she couldn't reach back to grab the tabs. At night we also add a onesie, which typically deters her...except this morning she figured out how to unsnap the onesie...

The good news is your son is showing his creativity and development that he's figuring out how to get that diaper off! Try the backward diaper -- also, there are nighttime pull-ups that might work for you, too. Good luck!

Hi A.,
My daughter is older but we use underwear over the diaper so when she gets one side undone it all stays in the underwear. Also, Pull ups over the underwear to keep it contained has worked for us. ( Pull ups from Hughies have velcro on the sides so you don't have to undress him to put in on and can always take it off after his nap.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
I am a cloth diaper momma. At night we use wool pants that go over the cloth diaper and prevent leaks. You could put a pair over his disposable to help keep it on and also prevent leaks. Wool is very breathable, warm in winter and cool in summer.
You can get them cheap on Ebay, usually made by work at home mothers out of recycled sweaters.

I hope this helps,

M

I agree with some of the other posters, by putting them on backwards. If he is 20 mos. and he goes on the potty before bathtime, and is successful, he may take them off when he wets them, and is uncomfortable. Maybe you could be a lucky duck, and have a fairly easy potty training exp. Make sure he is dry when you put him in bed, and listen to him during his nap. If he starts to stir, check on him, maybe he has to go. I know this seems crazy, but 1 month of craziness, may be all he needs.

I would definitely just put him in a onesie all the time. Problem solved. No pullups. I doubt they even make them small enough for a 19 month old.

Hi A., My children are all grown but they used to sell something called diaper doublers. Almost like a sanitary pad to put on with a diaper or a pull-up for extra absorbency. If not then put on his diaper and a onesie and some loose pants for his nap. Hopefully this phase will pass soon. Best wishes Grandma Mary

A.:

Switch to pull ups, or it might be that the diaper is on too tight.......leave it on a little looser.

Like some of the others have said so far - put him in a onesie or any type of clothing that he can't get to the diaper. If that deosn't work - - I had to actually put the diaper on backwards with my daughter - she couldn't reach the closure when they were behind her!

Yes, pullups work just as good as diapers do. Or you could put a pair of kid underpants over the diaper like the old fashioned "rubber pants" went over a cloth diaper -- this might keep his hands away from the closures so he can't undo unless he goes looking for them. Also when my girls would fall asleep without a diaper on as they got older (some times they'd do this on the couch), I'd slip one of those hospital bed pads (blue/absorbent lining) they use for bedridden people under them in case they had an accident --that way I'd just throw that out and not have to change the sheets. I also used to use those pads on the changing table for extra accident protection--loved them.

Pull-ups are so not absorbent. I learned that the hard way. I would just put him in a onesie at nap time to avoid any mess. Or pants with a snap & a zipper? HTH!

all depends on how long he sleeps, and how much he pees in his sleep. if he doesn't pee through a diaper, i would use a regular pull-up for nap time, but if he does pee through diapers during nap time i would use the good nights pull-ups (i had to do this for my daughter at bed time because she did the same thing but ONLY at bed time. now at 2 she takes off her diapers and runs around the house naked (just started this today) NOT a good thing being that i live w/ my 24 yr old brother and have nurses and nurses aids and aunts and uncles in and out of the house all throughout out the week (now i have to put TIGHT clothes on her so she can't take them off! no more loose stuff!). good luck, but i'm sure the pull ups will work FINE! THEY DID FOR ME!

Hi A.. There's no reason you can't put him in a onsie for his nap. Or try overalls, which he may not be able to take off. You could also consider diapering him backwards for his nap and see if that helps.

Good luck!

I think Pampers version of Pull-Ups would work for you...the sides do not un-hook, but have to be torn if you want them off like a diaper. Their absorbency is sufficient for nap time. Good luck!

Hello A., i noticed that my daughter doesn't pee during nap, so i put her to sleep without any diaper, but immediately after she wakes up i take her to toilet. Very easy. Before nap I offer her to go to toilet, sometimes she needs, sometimes no, but she doesn't need toilet during nap. You could put on the bed some waterproof sheet for the beginning ;) Good luck

Hey you could try cloth diapers,
G diapers have a large velcro tab that fastend at the back,

and it should be very easy to transition him to UNDERWEAR afterwards,

I use a prefold cloth diaper insert instead of the diposables because its cheaper, and you can double it up if he's a heavy wetter,

4 should be more than enough for you. and they last forever.

Email me if you want

Good luck

there are overnight pull-ups which are more absorbent then the regular ones. I use them with my son during the day also and have used overnight diapers daily since he was about 9 months old (he is 3 now). Until I did that he would leak through every other diaper I tried. I got sick of changing outfits. Give it a try. Hope it works.

I absolutely swear by Nikki Overnight Pants ( http://www.babyworks.com/ ) Yes I actually used them overnight and they did NOT leak. They seem expensive when you first look at them, but if you figure how much you'd be spending on Pull ups just to throw them out, it's alot more (and bad for the environment as well). The Nikki pants can last through 3 children, so you get MORE than your money's worth. (I get nothing for this recommendation, I'm not associated with them at all, just a mom who LOVES this product.)

DUCT TAPE!!!!!!! My 7 year old hated diapers and would not keep them on and she too would undo her diaper at night. She however learned how to take the diaper off even with a onesee on! I even had her take her diaper off in the car straped into her car seat! I put a piece of duct tape over the tabs and it worked until potty training. I went through a lot of duct tape and it made my mom cringe but it kept her from "going" all over everything. The 21 month old is now the same way and I use duct tape on her now too! However, she knows how to take that off too!!! I have Houdini kids!!! Just make sure you only stick it to the diaper because it will hurt pulling it off of skin! A.
