I have a five year old little girl who is the cutest and funniest kid in the world. She is very over weight (she weighs 100 pounds). She has not developed any illnesses, her pediatrician has ran all sorts of test and thankfully she is totally healthy, no diabetes, no thyroid, no cholestrol, no high blood pressure. She plays baseball at the local baseball park (Sta-Mo PONY)with her brothers (they are not overweight). She loves it. I would like to enroll her in some other type of sport that would get her some more exercise so she can lose a some weight. I liked the description of the Sport Skills Develop class offered at THe Little Gym of Sugar Land. Does any one know how much the little gym in Sugar Land charge? Or recommend another non competive sports related activity I could put her in?

What can I do next?

Hello! Its funny, because I feel like you are describing me. I was that way when I was younger then it all fell off in Middle School. Anyway, for the meantime, The Little Gym is quite pricy. I was going to take my toddler there and I don't remember the exact price, but I remembered other places were less. Now, I'm not sure where you live, but I am the head coach of an all star cheer program in New Territory. We have a tumbling class once a week, and we have lots of people who aren't part of our cheer program that come. The classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays (you can pick either day) and its only $40/month. If you want more info, let me know. Tumbling can be great excersize and a confidence builder as she progresses in her skills!

The YMCA has a lot of active programs for children. Right now they are registering for soccer and a few other sports. At the YMCA all children play and learn the basics. They do play against other teams but it is not competitive. All children play and receive a trophy at the end of the season. The trophy at the end really boosts my sons self esteem and he has made a lot of friends. All he did before I got him involved was sit inside, watch tv, and play video games. Now he really enjoys playing outdoors and being active.

I agree with the first poster....swimming is an EXCELLENT form of exercise. But, the Little Gym is fun too. My friend had her twin 4 year old boys in a summer camp there (at the one in Sugar Land) and they LOVED it. They have asked to go back, so she will probably sign them up again. I'm not sure how much it is or what they do, specifically, but I do know it is a big hit with the kids. I would give them a call and just ask how much they charge. Good luck! It's so great that you are trying to keep your daughter active at such a young age. It will teach her to be active into adulthood.

Good luck!

Our little one is also heavy and I'm obese, so I worry about it following her out of childhood and have her in several sports. We've got her in year-round swim lessons at the Houston Swim Club. There's one in Sugar Land and one in Katy. They teach them drowning-prevention type swimming, but they'll also teach them their strokes, etc., when that's finished In the summer, they can go into swim team, which can provide a really good workout. I really like swimming as a sport because it's pretty non-competitive (though it can be very competitive if she enjoys and excels at it), anyone can do it, it's a life skill that people need, it's a sport people can do from the cradle to the grave, and it's much easier on joints than most sports.

I'm not sure if the pricing is the same across the board, but...

TLG in Katy. Regular tuition is $300 for a 19 week session (if you pay all at once), they do offer payment plans - 3 payments of $105 or 5 payments of $68.

My oldest has been going for 2 years and loves it. The "baby" has been going for a year now and also loves it. I've seen many different body types come and go.

Swimming is a fantastic sport/life skill. Beginner swimmers may not reap the benefits that swimming can offer - healthwise, but definately a good skill for all kids to have.

Soccer is a really good sport too. There is a lot of running, but there's a coordination factor too. It's probably got the best opportunity for immediate benefits. At her age, soccer isn't really competitive. They don't even keep score in my daughter's league. There aren't even refs, the coaches act as the refs on the field. Spectators root for all the kids on field. Definately non competitive. The advantages to soccer is that in addition to a weekend game, there's usually a practice too - so that's 2 days a week they get some physical activity.

Anyway, good luck.
