Need Some Advice for 17 Month Old with Tummy Trouble

My 17 month old daughter had a little bout of the stomach bug in January. She seemed to recover ok and then got another little touch of it in February. Well, since the first stint of going through it, she hasn't tolerated a whole lot of dairy too well. Though before that, she LOVED milk and never had any troubles with it. Do you think it's normal for a baby to take so long to recover from it or could she suddenly have become allergic even though neither my husband or I are allergic to dairy?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Turns out that we had been substituting lots of diluted juices in place of milk and that seems to have made her BMs very soft. She's slowly starting to get back to normal. Thanks for all the advice!

B.,

She could be lactose intolerant. Try taking her off of all dairy for a week. Then reintroduce it. If she is still not tolerating it, it is likely lactose intolerance rather than an allergy.

Speak to her doctor - there are products on the market for kids (i.e. Lactaid), but I don't know the age at which they can start such a product.

Hi B.,

Our whole family just went through the nasty stomach and other end (eww) yuckies. I guess you can become lactose intolerant for a bit while you are recovering from having an intestinal virus. I read some research on this, plus my husband is a virologist and he was educating me. Our son had diarrhea after drinking milk for about a week after getting over the virus. So hang in there, it could be a temporary thing. If it lasts longer than you are comfortable with, you can always have your daughter tested for lactose intolerance to be sure.

Hi B.,

This same thing happened to my nephew a year ago. He had a stomach bug and got better than started to get sick again a few weeks later. Turned out that his system wasn't really back on track and after the first bout my sister started giving him milk again. When he got sick again the dr. told her that he had rotovirus and that milk was actually making it worse. She kept him off of milk for a week and reintroduced it to him again but the Lactaid free stuff. Since than she has had him on lactaid milk and he is fine. Drinks it without any problems. Hope this helps.

Try yogurt. I suggest yoplait custard style. It is a really good way to solve a number of tummy related issues. Good luck and best wishes.

B., my son also had the same issue with the milk thing. He had issues since birth with milk, the ped never lilstened to me and said that all babies have these issues in the early starts. I put him on say milk and didnt seem to have any issues, when he turned a year old a put him on regular milk and things were fine for about 6 mos. He then started with the belly aches and diarrhea all the time. When i talked to the ped he said to take him off all milk products for a week then reintroduce them. When i did that he seemed to be fine with the milk products. Now he at 3 years old still has issues with milk sometimes. He seems to be fine with it one day and the next it makes him sick.

No one in our family had milk issues but my son does.....he developed it later. He always had tummy problems and I wish I did the soy or rice milk sooner than later.
Hopefully in your case, it's just from the bug you child caught.
I wouldn't worry.

I think it's possible that she has temporarily lost her taste of milk from being sick.
