dr weil recommends geranium extract
In a few weeks, dear hubby, daughter and I are going to rural Maine to visit my MIL. The blackflies Up Country are immense in both size and number, and the gods only know about the mosquito situation. What would be a safe, non-chemical laden alternative to "Off" I can use on my kiddo? Please let me know your suggestions. Thank you!

Check out Avon. I took my two kids ages 2 & 8 last year to Roatan/Honduras where the flies and skeeters and sand fleas are horrible. They have a product called Bug Guard Plus and is deet free. The chemical used to repell the bugs is called Picaridin which is a plant based chemical and much safer than deet. We bought all three products since we spend so much time outdoors other than that trip and wanted it on hand. They have one with an spf which is convenient and safer than the other combo products on the market w/ the deet which is not recommended. I must say my kids left Roatan with no sunburn and few bug bites. Here's the link:

Hi J.,
You are right, its so hard to pick things that are safe for our kids, isn't it?
Shaklee's Basic H2 works really well. We tested it up at our friend's lake house a few years ago .. .OFF on one arm, H2 on the other. We still got bit on the OFF arm and nothing on the H2 arm. I may not have believed it if I hadn't tried it. Shaklee's H2 has thousands of uses!!
It is safe and non toxic. I am really picky about what I put into my children's bodies and on top of their skin, and I feel very happy with the H2.
If you'd like more information, I'd be happy to share.

This article is a little long, but if you scroll all the way to the bottom there are both all-natural bug repellant and sun screen. (The article is very eye-opening, but it is also a sales pitch.)
