Am looking for someone in the Milwaukee Area (just north of the stadium to be exact)but will drive anywhere for someone who can help by just watching or intertaining my adult handicapped daughter. I used to get "respite" care from UCP but you have to use it on a regular basis or they drop you. I also used to rely on our parents but for the last 5 years, have been taking care of them since all of our parents are now in need of assistance themselves and we tend to them. I am on my second marriage to a wonderful guy who was willing to marry me fully aware that my daughter would be apart of our lives. But for the last 5 years, besides the 24/7 job of my daughter we have spent all of our time just trying to survive these economic times (husband lost job)and taking care of our parents.

We really need some time together, away from all the people we take care of but are not financially able to hire registered help. My daughter doesn't need medical attention, she only needs supervision as she has the mind of a 5 year old and doesn't realize what could hurt her. She is really bubbly, outgoing and loves to talk, or take a short walk, or assist someone who is cooking. She loves to help people, within her abilities.
Does anyone know how to go about finding someone or where to look or would anyone like to help me?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

C. J

Hi, I'm an OT that works for MPS and a parent/friend of one of my students always forwards me great resources. I had a very long list attached to the information below, but I thought you could start here with a contact person. If you'd like the whole list emailed, let me know: ____@____.com and I'll send it.

The attached guide lists sites in the Metro Milwaukee area, and
neighboring counties. There is also a statewide respite organization:
Respite Care Association of Wisconsin (RCAW). Contact info for RCAW is
www.respitecarewi.org, or 877-260-9207. (This contact info is also
listed in the attached guide.)

I hope this information is helpful!
Thanks,
Emily

C.,

First of all, I'm sorry. It seems like a bit of a difficult life. Secondly, I have two ideas. If you belong to a church (or even if you don't) try putting up an ad in a church in your neighborhood. Generally, you'll get responses from responsible kind people that way and they'll be close to you already too. St. Sebastians and Mt. Olive are two that are close to that area. They are both on Washington Blvd. and Hawley/55th.
Also, I think maybe my stepdaughter would be willing to help. She's done tons of babysitting and is a very responsible woman. she's 22 and works full-time, but is always looking for different things to do and ways to supplement her income. Let me know if you would like me to ask her. (we live in the area, although she lives downtown.)
best of luck to you and take care of yourself.
A.

Hi C.. There is good help out there for you. I am a registered nurse and graduate student at Marquette University. I know a lot of people who are looking for the type of help you are seeking often post flyers at the nursing schools in the area. The nursing students are always looking for side jobs caring for people whether it's medical type of care or just being someone's companion. I know school just let out, but there are still a lot of students who take summer classes. My suggestion would be to call some of the nursing schools to see if there is any type of procedure you have to go through to hang a flyer on campus. Here is a brief list of some of the nursing schools in the area. Marquette, UWM, Alverno, MSOE, Cardinal Stritch, Concordia, MATC. Good luck!
