This request is for my neighbor baby who is 6 weeks old. Her mother is breast feeding her. She has trouble digesting her milk, she spits up after every feeding, sometime fresh and other times sower. She is restless every night from 6 to around midnight. She cries and cries and can't seem to get commfortable.

Her mother takes a lot of health supplements from the health food stores. Could the baby be allergic to some of these supplement? If so how would you check this out.

I would say #1 burp baby and once you get a burp try again. Some people think breast fed babies do not need to be burped but that is NOT the case. My husband's motto is 'burp them and burp them somemore' that's why we call him 'The Burp Master'.

#2 She should check the side effects of all of her (www.drugs.com should have most of them) suppliments and any that cause gas should be eliminated. I was taking chlorophil and eating trail mix (nuts & raisins) which was causing my fella to be collicky.

Good luck!

p.s. Gripe water might help, it's avalible at health and drug stores

Please contact a local La Leche League certified Leader. You can visit www.llli.org/WebUS.html or call their toll-free number.

"If you are unable to find a Group or Leader near you, 24-hour breastfeeding help is available toll-free in the US from the LLL Breastfeeding Helpline-US at 877-4-LALECHE (877-452-5324)."

Leaders in my town have been of GREAT help to me when I had breastfeeding difficulties. I would highly suggest getting (a breastfeeding friendly) pediatrician to check for any gastro-reflux problems. My sister-in-law went through 3 months (or was it 6?) with breastfeeding her first baby (a boy) while he spit up "a lot" due to a reflux problem. She had some advice which helped. I can't remember exactly. Also, it turned out that the "lots" of spit up was not nearly so much. The baby was still keeping down a lot more breastmilk than he was spitting up.

A few days late on this, but while this does sound like reflux, lots of times when breastfed babies react like this, they are probably sensitive to something in the mother's diet. Generally the most likely culprit is dairy, as it is super hard for the baby to process. The mom should probably try and elimination diet and see if that helps rather than trying to get the baby on unnecessary reflux meds.

Sounds like reflux to me. My little man was a spit up machine! He was also fussy in the evenings. I asked the Dr. about it and he got a swallow study done which showed him just sending a majority of what he took in right back up. We gave him prevacid daily for about 5 months and he still spit up a lot, but he didn't cry about it anymore and his weight did just fine. So I say talk to the Dr. asap :)

She could try discontinuing the use of the supplements for a week or so to see if that helps. If not, then she should probably talk to her pediatrician. It could be reflux. My son was diagnosed around that age and now he is on meds for it and is a whole new baby! He used to arch his back and cry after every feeding. And the spitting up was out of control. He still spits up a lot, but is not in any discomfort anymore. Really, the only way to know if the supplements are causing the problem is for her to take them out of her diet long enough to clear her system and see if the baby gets better. I would definitely recommend that she try that first.

She should go to the doc. The baby might have acid refulx or yes, could be irritated by what the mother is taking. The mother need to be wary of the supplements as there are many, many things women should not take while breastfeeding. She should stop the supplements and see if that helps. Also, tell her to go to the doc! Good luck!

I agree. Sounds like reflux. She may want to discuss the supplements with her doctor, to make sure they are okay to take while breastfeeding. But as far as the reflux goes, it helped my kids (both had it as infants) to eat a little bit then burp, then eat, then burp, until they were not full but satisfied. I had to nurse more frequently, but it wasn't long, since they quickly grew out of the reflux.

I hope the baby's okay soon. Take care!
