Hi K., my daughter who turns two in December just had her tonsils and adenoids out three weeks ago. I was reading some of the other responses and I am worried that maybe my baby is out of the norm. She took every day of the two weeks recovery time the doctor said she would need, she must have caught a cold virus in the hospital as well (All Childrens in St. Pete) because her breathing after the surgery was worse than before. I feel like we didn't sleep for two weeks. We went in for the surgery in the morning, couldn't give her anything to eat or drink. Much later, she was finally brought back for surgery, by this time, she was hungry, tired, cranky but All Childrens has some great toys for distraction. You get to go back to a holding room with your child and then a nurse literally grabs her from your arms and promises she'll be under sedation within 30 seconds. There's nothing like that look in your baby's eyes when she's being carried off by a complete stranger! ugh! Then you have to wait in a conference room for the doctor. The surgery only took 20 minutes so that was a blessing, however, the "recovery" time where she wakes up from anesthesia took 45 minutes and you can't go back with her, you have to wait in a family waiting area. That about killed me. I was stalking the hallways to see if I could hear her crying. I could just imagine her waking up and confused -with no mommy there! Then we went to a room upstairs, they admitted her because of her age. She was fine after she woke up, actually kind of hyper, she pulled out her IV twice-they don't really have a way to keep that from happening other than putting a sock on the baby's hand. That just made it more interesting to my little darlin. The nurses aren't super quick on bringing the fluids that she should be drinking so several times we by-passed them and went down stairs to buy our own Gatorade for her. The next day we went home, she was surprisingly okay that day too. The third day was hell on earth. She was so sick and in so much pain. You truly have to keep giving that pain medicine every 4 hours on the dot, she would start getting fussy at three and a half hours just to remind us that the meds were wearing thin. It was a rough two weeks but now she sleeps much better, she doesn't snore or toss & turn. She seems to be okay-thanks to God- and I know your little one will be fine too, esp. since he's only having his adenoids, maybe the healing is faster for that procedure.
I probably shouldn't share this but my husband's three year old sister died many years ago because of a morphine overdose in a Kentucky hospital so imagine our fears with anesthesia-my husband and his family were hysterical and extremely hard on the staff with a lot of questions. I'm glad my daughter's procedure was at All Children's because they do this all day long. They are used to giving tiny doses. They're pros, so no worries. Your little soldier will be in good hands. God bless and good luck, you will be a busy momma with all the cuddling and nursing in the next few weeks, remember to take care of yourself too.
