My 2 year old is scheduled to have his very large adenoids removed in 2 weeks as well as have exploratory surgery and biopsy of his voice box. Does anyone else have any expereince with this? I am 7 months pregnant and already dealing with hormone instability, so I am very worried about having my son go through this surgery. Please let me know if you have gone through this and was it successful. My son is currently unable to breath through his nose at all, he is a difficult sleeper, and is getting horse and croupy with exertion. I am confident and comfortable with the doctor (Dr. Cressman), but am still unable to sleep at night secondary to worrying.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who sent me information on Dr. Cressman and the Pediatrick Surgical center as well as andenoidectomy. My son's expereince was fantastic. I could not have asked for a better experience. The staff at the surgical center in Brandon is wonderful and the facility is super kid friendly. Dr. Cressman and the anaesthesiologist were also very informative and helped ease all of our concerns. My sons recovery has been great as well. He was back to himself by the evening. We immediately noticed his improved breathing espescially while sleeping. He was up a few times the first night, but went back to bed easily and has returned to better sleep habbits. Thanks again for all the encouraging results and experiences it helped a great deal.

My daughter had her adnoids out at 18 months. She did extremely well. She was even outside playing later on that day. I was shocked. I felt so gulity but I knew she needed it done so she could sleep. She had her tonsils at 3, and that was very difficult recovery but she is rarely sick. We had her operations done a Childrens Hospital in Phila. As long as you are comfortable with the dr. and hospital you will be ok

My son had his adnoids and tonsils taken out when he was two, back in March, and it went great! Before then, he had a constant runny nose and sinus infection after sinus infection. Since his surgery, he hasn't so much as sneezed! The first couple of days, he will need the pain meds and it is like they never had anything done, then day 4-about 10 is the hardest. I have heard that the adnoids when removed without the tonsils are alot easier, so I wouldn't worry. I am sure he will fine and you will be amazed with the difference. Good luck!

you have an amazing doctor in dr. cressman. he has done my son's adnoinds, tonsils, 3 sets of tubes, and tempanoplasty. he has been taking care of my son since he was 1 year old. david is now 10 and we have to see dr cressman annually for hearing evaluations and follow up.

the adnoid surgery is very easy. it's day surgery and the baby will be fine by night fall. if you are having the surgery done at All Children's Hospital in St Pete - you have the best there too. they are absolutely amazing with children. they did all of david's surgeries and i had surgery there for open heart surgery 32 years ago.

please don't worry. if dr. cressman advises this surgery - it's necessary and it's in the baby's best intersts.

K.,

I am writting you to see if I am going to the same Dr. Cressman as your child went to. He has several office's and does the surgery in Odessa, St. Joesph's, All Childrens and somewhere in Brandon. Their web site is www.pediatirc-ent.com and his name is Wade Cressman. I saw where you posted this question and several mother's said their child had it done with Dr. Cressman and he is wonderful. I just want to make sure that it is the same Doctor cause we are going to have her's removed next Friday!
Any advice you can give me on what to expect afterward would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi K., my daughter who turns two in December just had her tonsils and adenoids out three weeks ago. I was reading some of the other responses and I am worried that maybe my baby is out of the norm. She took every day of the two weeks recovery time the doctor said she would need, she must have caught a cold virus in the hospital as well (All Childrens in St. Pete) because her breathing after the surgery was worse than before. I feel like we didn't sleep for two weeks. We went in for the surgery in the morning, couldn't give her anything to eat or drink. Much later, she was finally brought back for surgery, by this time, she was hungry, tired, cranky but All Childrens has some great toys for distraction. You get to go back to a holding room with your child and then a nurse literally grabs her from your arms and promises she'll be under sedation within 30 seconds. There's nothing like that look in your baby's eyes when she's being carried off by a complete stranger! ugh! Then you have to wait in a conference room for the doctor. The surgery only took 20 minutes so that was a blessing, however, the "recovery" time where she wakes up from anesthesia took 45 minutes and you can't go back with her, you have to wait in a family waiting area. That about killed me. I was stalking the hallways to see if I could hear her crying. I could just imagine her waking up and confused -with no mommy there! Then we went to a room upstairs, they admitted her because of her age. She was fine after she woke up, actually kind of hyper, she pulled out her IV twice-they don't really have a way to keep that from happening other than putting a sock on the baby's hand. That just made it more interesting to my little darlin. The nurses aren't super quick on bringing the fluids that she should be drinking so several times we by-passed them and went down stairs to buy our own Gatorade for her. The next day we went home, she was surprisingly okay that day too. The third day was hell on earth. She was so sick and in so much pain. You truly have to keep giving that pain medicine every 4 hours on the dot, she would start getting fussy at three and a half hours just to remind us that the meds were wearing thin. It was a rough two weeks but now she sleeps much better, she doesn't snore or toss & turn. She seems to be okay-thanks to God- and I know your little one will be fine too, esp. since he's only having his adenoids, maybe the healing is faster for that procedure.
I probably shouldn't share this but my husband's three year old sister died many years ago because of a morphine overdose in a Kentucky hospital so imagine our fears with anesthesia-my husband and his family were hysterical and extremely hard on the staff with a lot of questions. I'm glad my daughter's procedure was at All Children's because they do this all day long. They are used to giving tiny doses. They're pros, so no worries. Your little soldier will be in good hands. God bless and good luck, you will be a busy momma with all the cuddling and nursing in the next few weeks, remember to take care of yourself too.

my son had his adnoids removed Aug 8, he was 17 months old. I am a RN, so as well as you I was freaked.... he did great though, they did a culture and some sinus flushing as well as a sinus biopsy when he was under. He was a little combative when waking up from anesthesia, but that is to be expected. Lots of adult wake up that way, and most young children do too, because they are too little to comprehend that they are going to surgery, they wake up a little freaked b/c they have no idea what just happened. But really he did great. He was pretty sleepy most of the day from the pain meds and anesthetic, but we got to leave for home with in 45 minutes of him waking up. Where are you having the surgery done, we had ours done at Tampabay surgery center on MLK in Tampa. The anestheiologist was great he held him while putting him under and startedthe IV right after he was out, so he didn't have to go through any of the ad stuff awake.

Your little guy will do great you can contact me if you want with any questions. Good luck!

My 15 mo old son had his removed on Oct 11 by Dr Orobello. I think they are the same group of Dr's. It was done in 15 min and he can breathe so much better now. He must have been so stuffed up before. Good luck. Are you going to All Children's? It was wonderful.

My son had been going to speech since the age of 2 and it was his speech teacher when he was in kindergarten that suggested I have him checked out for enlarged adnoids. She said that he heard sounds as if he were underwater. Sure enough, he had surgery to have them removed. (As a coincidence, a girl in his class had the same surgery on the same morning!) The only problem Daniel had after the surgery, was that his hearing was now intensified, so he was very sensitive to loud sounds. His teacher said that he would put his hands over his ears when there was a lot of talking in class. When I would take the vacuum out, he would go running into another room and close the door. I don't know if your child will encounter this problem, but if they do, their ears do eventually adjust to the "noise". I hope and pray every thing goes well for your child. L.

Dr. Cressman did my son's adnoid removal when he was four, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience! Adnoids and tubes the first time, and stents in the ears twice more after that, and each time he was equally amazing as were the nurses at All Children's in St. Pete where he usually goes. My son is 11 now, and still doing great. Outgrew the ear problems a few years ago thankfully, but I know just which doctor we'd be seeing if we needed it again!

I don't have any personal experience w/ adenoids surgery. But we do have experience w/ Dr Cressman. My daughter had surgery (for tubes) done by him. Basically what happened was that they took my daughter from me to another room. Then, I was told to wait in the waiting area. She was put to sleep w/ a gas mask in a few seconds. The whole surgery was over in about 15 minutes, and she was back in my arms. Everything went perfectly. Dr Cressman is an excellent physician. He has years of experience doing surgery for infants/toddlers. So, my point is just to tell you to relax, your son is in great hands w/ Dr Cressman. I do advice you to plan on giving 100% of your time to your son after the surgery. He might not sleep well, and will need special care. So, plan on taking several days off from work. Other than that, good luck to you and your son.

Hi K.,

i had two of my sons have their adenoids removed as well. the surgery itself only took about 10-15 minutes. the long part was waiting for them to take them back. it took about another 15 minutes or so after the procedure was over for them to wake up and then we were taken back to be with them. other than the REALLY BAD breath everything went wonderfully, they were up and running around they next day. not to mention my oldest son went from being in the doctors office every 10-14 days to never having another sinus infection (he was 20 months when he had the surgery and is 8 now) it was one of the best things the doctors could have done for him. i praise God for him being able to have that surgery. Good luck with everything!

Dr. Cressman removed my daugther's adenoids this past April and I was surprised at how smoothly it went. The whole surgery took maybe 20 minutes. She wasn't really having breathing issues but this was her second set of ear tubes so they recommended removing the adenoids as well. She only took some Motrin that same day (more for inflammation than pain) but was fine by the next day. She did have a bloody nose a few days later but I think that was normal and at the time she was running around quite a bit. She also had one episode of vomiting, but again, I think that is normal due to drainage.

Good luck with the surgery - for us, it was the right decision and actually less of an ordeal than I had imagined. However, we did not have the exploratory part that you mentioned. I hope all goes well and you get some answers.

ETA - My daughter is 6 and we have had both of her surgeries done in Brandon - they are fabulous there too.

a friend of mine went through this with her son because he seemed to have speech problems and difficulty breathing/sleeping. It went very well and easily. I wouldn't worry, especially if you trust your doctor.

My daughter was 10 when she had her large adenoids removed, she also could not breathe through her nose. She did fine it was an in and out surgery. They say the younger they are the easier it is on them so being that my daughter was 10 I was worried but everything turned out fine and she can even taste her food better. She is very happy we had it done.
