Hi! I am pregnant and really want to consider cloth diapering. (When I think about the waste with my 3 year old...) Anyway, I need some reputable sources for cloth diaper info and sales. I am very frugal so I would appreciate any tips anyone has for me.

I use a variety of cloth diapers with my baby and I love shopping at Peppermint Baby Boutique in Richardson. I would really recommend going to their monthly free cloth diaper class to learn more. You can find the schedule on their website peppermint.com. There are lots of new fancy and easy options, but don't be afraid the try out the good old fashioned prefolds. I love using prefolds with good covers and they are very affordable and easy to care for.

My 24 year old daughter wore cloth diapers. I had five dozen diapers(still have about 3 dozen for cleaning, polishing, etc.)and a diaper pail filled halfway with Borax and water. I would rinse out "dirty" diapers in the toilet and put both dirty and wet diapers in the pail. I washed a load every day when she was tiny and every other day as she got older. I used Dreft, vinegar and Borax in the washer...NO SOFTENER, NO BLEACH, and line dried whenever I could. At the time I had an Italian front load washer that heated its own water and got really hot. I never had trouble with diaper rash, stained diapers or a stinky house! I even looked forward to hanging the diapers on the line when my husband got home and could watch her while I was out there. Good luck.

Hi there! I too am very frugal. My baby is almost 4 months old so I can tell you my experience so far. We use Bum Genius 3.0 diapers. They are WONDERFUL. I love them so much. When I was pregnant I spent hours and hours researching different brands, systems, methods, and reading mom's reviews. Bum Genius always got high marks, so I ordered one for my best friend to use on her baby. They worked out well, and go on and off like disposables. So I registered for these diapers in a variety of colors here www.cottonbabies.com you can set up a registry. Thankfully, with the generosity of lots of relatives buying them off my registry for me, I was able to get all of the diapers I needed without having to buy them. However, if I had to buy them, I totally would. They are expensive at 17.95 each, but they last. So your total cost would be somewhere around $400-$600 depending on how many you got, but disposables cost thousands of dollars over the diapering life of your child, so look at it as an investment. And keeping diapers out of the landfill. I ended up having 30 diapers, which is probably a bit too many. I could have gotten away with 20. Oh and I bought the one-size pocket bumgenius---they grow with the child so you only have to buy that one size, and the microfiber inserts rock---
The all in one with the built in liner take way too long to dry, and these come with a small and a large liner-and you can stuff them depending on your needs at the time. I have never had any leaks.
They wash really well. I keep a dry pail with a liner (whamies) and when I change the diaper I pull the liner out and drop the liner and outer cover in the pail. Every other day I wash all of it and throw the liner in the wash too. When I dry I dry the outside covers first because they don't take very long to dry, and then put the microfiber liners in a dry cycle by themselves on high so they get really dry (they are thick). Then my husband stuffs them while he is watching TV. It becomes a routine.
The colors are very cute. We even have some blue ones for our baby girl. The white ones are the least cute.
If you have any other questions just let me know. I know these have a high re-sale value which was another attraction for me.
Also you can buy these locally in Richardson at Peppermint www.peppermint.com

Hi W.,

I'd be happy to help you find what works best for you! We have a try it kit that lets you use 7 different types of diapers so you can see first-hand which you like best. The cost is $10, you keep the kit for 2-3 weeks. It comes with enough detergent to wash the diapers 7 times, and complete instructions on how to use and wash the diapers. We're also here to help if you need it. We can give you the kit a week or so before your due date, so you can have the diapers ready when the baby is born.

Of course, you could always use diaper service, but you would definitely save more to wash at home. Please call me if you'd like to reserve a kit, or if you have any questions about cloth diapers, even if you go another route!

So glad you are choosing cloth!

HI! I belong to a moms group, and we have had one presentation on Cloth Diapering and we are planning a second. If you are interested, let me know and I can get you the info. The moms group is the Luna Moms Club/Stroller Strides of Arlington. The organizer is Maggie Grayson. She is on Mamasource sometimes too. If you go to Meetup.com you might be able to find our group online, or like I said you can email me.

Everything that the others have said is great. There are several wonderful cloth diaper systems out there. I can't even understand why so many people still use disposables. One thing I did want to mention along with this is that. At first, we didn't have much money to buy the great cloth diapers, but we had hundreds of dollars of Babies R Us gift cards. So, I looked there and they do have the old fashioned cloth diapers with vinyl pull on covers. I started with these and then saved the money we would have been spending on disposables to slowly build up the diapers that I really liked from on-line. Even the old fashioned ones are easy to use especially for an exclusively breastfed baby. And you can get started with everything you need for around $25.

I've been using cloth for years. It saves tons of $$$$ and is really not that hard. I've found most of my diapers online or I've made my own. Three sites I'd recommend:
ebay
www.diaperswappers.com
www.thediaperhyena.com (Check the "reap what you sew" section to try making your own.)

i wanted to try cloth diapering, but i still haven't quite gotten into the swing of it. i bought 6 kissaluvs cloth diapers for newborns (reviewed as the best for newborns!) but i ended up only using 4 of them once, and two others are still brand new. my daughter, who is now 3 months, has outgrown the diapers, now that i think i'm finally ready to start using them! with that said, if you'd like to give it a try, i'll be willing to sell you my kissaluvs for a fraction of what i paid so that i can start shopping around for a new size! if you want more info, feel free to contact me. i forgot i even had the diapers until i read your post right now!

You need to post this question on mothering.com. I am a member there also. The magazine is a great resource as well. They don't even advertise disposables only cloth. You will be able to find a bunch second hand that were either never or gently used as well as recommendations from experienced CD moms.

Check out Peppermint Baby Boutique in Richardson http://www.peppermint.com/ The do cloth diapering classes and sell the products as well. Many cloth diapering moms around here use them for their products and/or try them there and then try to find them online too as there are several websites where you can 'diaper swap' for sizes that you need if you aren't doing snap-down diapers (8-35 lbs. in weight range for snap-downs). Hope that helps! Congrats on #2!!!

Congratulations on your new baby and your decision to cloth diaper! Speaking as a mom who is cloth diapering my third baby and who makes and sells cloth diapers (www.jojosmom.etsy.com), here are some things I've learned in the past several years:

Craigslist is good for getting used diapers.
Don't spend a lot of money on newborn diapers, they won't fit very long.
Try a few different systems before you buy a lot of any one kind - I'd recommend starting out with a few prefolds and covers, a few fitteds, and some pockets and/or all-in-one's.

Personally I prefer prefolds for tiny (non-squirmy) babies, then fitteds or pockets once they start getting squirmy.

For your newborn stash I'd recommend getting 2-3 dozen infant prefolds, 6-8 Proraps covers (they are some of the most inexpensive covers, which is good b/c your baby won't be wearing them very long). Also about 2 dozen cloth wipes.

There is a store in Farmers Branch called Babies Bottoms and More that is great. Diana is very knowledgeable and can show you all the different kinds of cloth diapers. She also has a section in her store for used diapers which I've found to be very economical. Their website is www.babiesbottomsandmore.com. Check their calendar or call before going over there, they have limited hours.

Finally, I teach sewing classes on sewing your own cloth diapers. If you are crafty and have a sewing machine, you may be interested in this. I can do private lessons for $15/hr (I will give you a list of which supplies to bring) or we can set up a class through Babies Bottoms and More that provides all the fabric and notions needed.

I hope this helped! Feel free to email me or contact me through my Etsy store (jojosmom.etsy.com) if you have any other questions!
