Our A/C has been working overtime with all this heat, especially with all the floor to ceiling windows in our house.
Solar screens weren't a financial option for us, so I did some research and found a cheaper solution. There's a product at Lowe's called solar film. You affix it to your windows and it deflects the heat without compromising too much of the light, and it really isn't too noticeable from outside-- just gives off a reflection, pretty much. We've only had it up for a few days, but it is AMAZING!
The brand-- Gila-- puts out several different levels of their products. There's stuff for if you want blackout, stuff for privacy, etc. We went with the one that had thermal in the title. The finish is "platinum". I was so worried that it would look trashy or like foil in the windows, but it is surprisingly subtle. I'd definitely recommend it.

I was about to place an order for double cell shades to go on my skylight. For my size, it would run about $200 at Home Depot. I am interested in what else I could do to cover the skylight and make it cooler.
