Need Ideas for Boy 27 Months Who Takes off Diaper During Nap and Night

My son takes off his pjs and diaper during nap time and at night, and if it is filled with feces, he sometimes hops in it or spreads it on his crib and bedding. My husband and I no longer take him out of his crib to clean up the sheets and bed as that is what he wants. We clean up and then put him down on the mattress pad. This behavior started at about age 2 and is becoming more of a problem. Does anyone know of a diaper that is hard to remove or some other means to deter him?

You can put a strip of duct tape around the diaper at the waist. No kidding: duct tape is useful in so many ways!

He may be trying to tell you he's ready to be potty trained, and that he needs a shorter nap.

Interesting dilemma! How about if you double-diapered him with one of the diapers fastened at the back? In lieu of that can you find a one-piece pajama that would work - sort of a coverall? Hanna Anderson has them for this age.

Just my $0.02. Good Luck!

Believe it or not, duct tape works very well. You just wrap it around the waist one time, and he won't be able to get the diaper off. I went through this with my twins. We put the tape on for a few weeks, and they slowly but surely forgot about taking their diapers off. Now we are at the point where we don't need to use the tape anymore..

Good luck!

My son did this. We potty trained. You could start and then he might have more of a routine with when he's peeing or pooping, and you can do it before naptime. We also lied down with him until he fell asleep at nap time and now he sleeps in a bed for naps. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that though, bc now it's a new set of naptime problems! Someone had suggested putting on pull ups at naptime bc they are harder to get off, but I did not try this.

Hi S.,

My son is not old enough yet but a friend of mine warned me of this phase! She said to do one or both of these tips: use duck tape around the waist of his diaper and/or put a t-shirt over his zipper pajamas so that he can't get the pj's off. I hope this helps and good luck!

Seems like he's not too tired if he has time for all that. I'd suggest giving up the nap. My daughter quit napping the day she turned two so it's quite possible that's there's no longer a physical need for naps. When they finally give up naps life is great, they sleep so much better at night!!

Also, at 27 months he's old enough for potty training--maybe he's trying to tell you he's ready!

I sew custom diapers and would be happy to work with you to create some that are toddler-removal proof. www.bun-o-matic.com.

Good luck,
