Need Help with Nutritious Snacks for Teens

My family is trying to eat healthy now after years of eating whatever we wanted. I need some ideas besides carrots, celery. I am keeping apples, bananas, berries around but we miss things like crackers. My son doesn't like fruit and few vegs so that makes it difficult. I would appreciate any ideas. We aren't changing our eating habits to lose weight but more to avoid health problems in the future and to be healthy. Our family history is pretty bad. I would also like to know if anyone is giving their teens vitamins and which ones are good. Thanks for any help.

What can I do next?

Take your kids with you to Trader Joes or Henrys market, they have healthy food, but lots of snack options. I am trying to eat healthier, but have a huge bag of snacks to choose from...little packets of almonds, trailmix, fruit sticks etc that are in prepackaged size amounts. If your kids go with you, they can pick out some yummy snack options. It's a sure thing! JKV

Hi D.,
It is so important to eat healthy to live longer and avoid heath problems. I applod you for being so aware of the health benefits for your family. My family history is pretty bad as well with Arthritis, Diabetes, Heart Problems and more. So I too needed to make sure I found something that would keep my two teen kids out of the line of fire. I have found a wonderful juice and by drinking just four ounces a day it is equivalent to 13 servings of fruit a day! Imagine the antioxidant levels and medicinal properties of 19 fruits from around the world all put into one drink! The taste is great, rich berry with a chocalate overtone. My kids love it and dont realize all the wonderful things it is doing for them. You can make dressing with it, freeze it and make icees, put it in pancakes, make a smoothie or just have a 2 oz shot in the morning and b4 bed! These fruits have been used for medicinal purposes by indigenous people for centuries to ward off diseases, keep healthy and add vitality in their lives! I am living proof that this juice is the best thing out there! I am so passionate about it I now share it with everyone of my friends and family. I have seen amazing results with weight loss, pain relief, mood swing correction, sleep apnea and more. I do have a website and you can find out more there. You buy it through the company I am just the messenger! www.thegreatproduct.com/christyhutchins. I will be happy to give you a bottle and see for yourself. Dont take my word..try it! This is a great addition to your family and I promise you this will accomplish exactally what you are looking for! Call me anytime...###-###-#### only because I care!!

They now have the 100 calorie packs! They taste pretty good without all the extra stuff! We really like the Oreo one! It gives you the taste of the Oreo but once you are done with the bag we really don't want the real thing anymore! Also I have found that if I have cheese and lunch meat already in a sandwich bag to the portion size we eat better. No more I'm hungry lets make a huge sandwich problem! Plus when I really don't feel like making a sandwich I just eat the cheese and meat it is a good snack full of protein!
Hope this helps!

Converting from bad eating habits to good ones may not come overnight, yet if you are determined you can have great success. I would let everyone pick/decide what fruits and vegies they like and how they like it cooked or not cooked. Pita bread is a great alternative try to get the ones that are more wholesome, check labels.
Popcorn is a good alternative to crackers, not the packaged kind, but the air popped kind, no need for salt or butter, but if you must have limit and measure the amount placed on the popcorn. Look for baked chips and again read the labels. Limit the amount of unhealthy food intake.
Salads can be very good by becoming creative. Add, apples, mandarin orange slices (canned, drained, light syrup)raisins, almonds (slivered), bell peppers, etc and no dressing! Unless you use extra virgin olive oil (first cold press) and balsamic vinegar and you could add italian seasoning.
Try a Mango or papaya. Make a fruit salad with some coconut flakes. Make baked fries from a potato, slice, baste with a little olive oil and bake till tender.
Spinach salad, fresh spinach, mandarin oranges (like above), sliced almonds, drizzle with lemon juice, throw in some dried cranberries for color and flavor.
Pears are a great fruit and full of fiber.
Hope this helps
I was a former starch eater (loved my bread!) and now am the healthiest one in my dept at work.
You can do it!

Try to buy snacks w/out high frutcose corn syrup, sucrose, corn syrup, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, honey, moloasses, frutcose, dextrose, Aspartame (nutrasweet, splenda, equal, etc..) hydrogenated oils, Refined, enriched and fortified and foods with dyes or #'s,

Trader Joes has some great snacks.

Some ideas off of the top of my head:
wholegrain crackers (Kashi TLC and the likes)
cheese sticks
nuts: walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds (of course in moderation) but an apple and 10 almonds for example would make a great snack
Experiment with new fruits and veggies. Have your son pick one new fruit and veggie out when you go shopping. Ask him to try one new thing a week. Mango, kiwi and strawberries are so sweet and yummy it's like eating dessert.
cereal makes a great snack, some yummy ones that kids will love are Puffins, Kashi Autum wheat, Mighty Bites, Oatmeal squares, just try to pick out only cereal that is low in sugar, maybe 5-7 grams per serving.
Veggies or pita chips with hummus
air popped popcorn
Whole wheat pretzels
smoothie
Edemame
hard boiled eggs
** Some of these I took from my friend, Amy Quinn's handout. She sells Juice Plus. Your son would qualify to receive free vitamins as long as an adult is taking Juice Plus capsules. Amy is a great resource not only for Juice Plus but she really knows her food! Her email address is: ____@____.com email her for more info. She also teaches a nutrition class in Temecula.

Congratulations to you for wanting to do this for your family!

I have a 18 yr old, a 15 yr old, an 11 yr old and work full time. I usually try to have a veggie tray in the fridge for the kids for when they come home from school to have as a snack until I get home to cook dinner. I also keep different varieties of cheeses already cut up for them. I don't know about you, but if I don't keep things easy around my house things don't get done or eaten. I keep wheat thins, cheeze it's and other types of crackers on hand as well to go with the cheese. Good luck!

How about Nutri grain cereal bars. I am not sure on the actual "nutrition" value of them but I can only imagine that it is healthier than most things. Also I saw on Oprah that sugar free jello with some whip cream on top is really good too. Tastes great but still healthy. I am 22 and atleast took vitamin c throughout the years. But a multi vitamin is not a bad choice either.
some other ideas:
celery and peanut butter
raisins
I hope this helps
