We've found 3 dead mice at different times in our basement this past summer at 3 different places but didn't worry too much. My husband did put a sticky pad in the basement but has not caught anything. This past Sunday my daughter saw a live one running down from the top in the garage and just terrified...we're wondering if anyone has similar situation and what did you end up doing? We did get some mouse traps from Ace yesterday but are wondering if we should just get exterminators to come check it out...if you can recommend one, please let me know if they helped you figure out where they get in and tried to get to the bottom of this. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Please don't use the glue traps. They are the most cruel way for the mice to die. Actually all forms of mice control are cruel, but the glue traps are by far the worst. The best thing to do is buy humane mouse traps and then re-release them somewhere far from homes. But somehow I have a feeling you won't be doing that. I just have a lot of respect for all living things and do not believe in cruel killing methods.

Be aware that what the exterminators use is basically what you buy at your local hardware store, but at much higher prices. I used to live in Elmhurst right on the Prairie path. When we first moved there we had a ridiculous mouse problem . I swear by the pestacator, it emits an ultrasonic sound through the wiring in the walls. It drives them crazy and they find a new home away from the noise. We lived there and used them for 5 years. Never had a mouse problem again. I use them in my new house and haven't had any problems. I do use bait and traps in garage and have caught a few, but never have had any in the house.

We have them in the garage and basement also. We used the humane traps that trap them inside and they cannot get back out. We then just let them go far from our house. They actually worked better for us then the Decon ones.

Anyway, we got rid of quite a few, but we now need to find out where they come in and keep them out.

We used Orkin for an ant problem, and they did put some sticky mouse traps in our garage and basement, but we ended up having a small bird get stuck in one and had to bring it to a animal rescue place. I will not use the sticky traps again. Besides I do not want to have to discard dead mice.

Good luck.

I use DECON,which makes the mice go out the way they came, to die. I can't do traps. YUK! They now even have DECON trap houses, where the mice go in, die, and you throw the whole thing away. Good Luck!

There was a post on this a few weeks back. We just evicted our "friends" from the basement too. My husband set some peanut butter traps and caught 2 of them, and the third took the trap with him, but eventually must have died somewhere and we found the trap empty. I am petrified of mice, so we called Rose Exterminators in Villa Park. Gary, was our rep, and he was very informative and thorough in his search. He baited our entire basement, and they do a recheck in 2 weeks to see if any are eating off the poison. Thankfully, ours are gone, but we have decided to do a quarterly service. Gary also walked around the exterior of our house, and explained to me where they could be getting in and how to take care of the trouble areas with steel wool and screens. He was also aware of us having children, and made sure to explain how safe their products are. I feel better that I can now visit my basement again. GOOD LUCK!

Hi C. -

Would you consider a pet cat? When we first moved into our house we had our first mouse within a couple months. However, we were unaware that we had one. My loveable cat was a stalker and once he saw the mouse go behind the dishwasher he did not leave until that mouse came out. The next morning I was blowdrying my hair and he brought me the mouse. We haven't had once since and that has been about 3 years. I heard somewhere that mice are more likely to not enter a house if they smell a cat. But that was just word of mouth. Also cats are great for killing bugs. I am terrified of bugs myself, so the cats make it easier for me for finding them (and they do) and eating them.
I hope I was able to help.
Have a great holiday!
