Need Help with Kindergarten Ideas

I am helping out the teacher setting up her kindergarten graduation and so excited about it. I am making the graduation hats for the kids from paper. The teacher gave me a purple color hard paper and I am wondering what color I should be using for the string, and what material (not very expensive) I should be using. I am thinking to play the marching music when the kids put their hats on. The teacher is having a pizza party for the class and parents. Any suggestions to make this day more memorable would be appreciated. Thanks!!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your advice. The graduation party went great! I made the graduation hats for all the kids and they turned out very cute and almost like real ones :) I played the music when the teacher was giving them the hats and then again when they were given the "diplomas". I could see some tears here and there. Then I made this beautiful power point presentation with all he kids pictures and videos that I have. The teacher cried! I also printed a poem, from the teacher to the parents and rolled it and she was giving that with the diplomas to the students. very nice!!

Yarn is a perfect idea for the tassel and string on the hat. You can glue it on the hat and then put a flat button over it. I like red or gold for the tassel with purple paper. One of my best memories of kindergarten graduation (yup - still remember it) was that my teacher had taken books (the little Golden Books) and wrapped the paper around them for the flat part of the hat like a gift then after graduation we all opened them and there was a book signed by our teachers. I still have the book - you can pick them up at a Half Price Books even. What about certificates or "diplomas" rolled into scolls and tied with the same ribbon. That way you can call their names and they could walk across to get a diploma. See if local kid friendly place has coupons you can give out inside the diploma - Chuck E Cheese, etc.

Have Fun!

We had to do an acrostic poem using the letters of our child's first name (only one word per letter). The poems were then put into a PowerPoint presentation along with pictures of the kids.

At my son's kindergarten graduation they had a DVD of the kids. Pictures that had been taken all during they year and neatly put together with music on the DVD that was played at the end of the ceremony. Not a dry eye in the bunch after that was over. (a variation would be to add in baby pictures along with a current picture of each child) Another idea is maybe you could have each child come forward and tell what they are going to be when they grow up, you would be amazed at some of the answers you get. My son's class also gave out a carnation to each mom at the end of the ceremony.

As a former Kindergarten teacher I've had some experience with this exciting moment. I would just buy some inexpensive white yarn or cut out a tassel from paper (make copies) and have the kids color them whatever color(s) they want! Playing Pomp & Circumstance is super cute since they are so little and it's such a meaningful song. Just lots of smiles, tears, and cameras, make it so memorable! Enjoy! :)

I totally still remember my K graduation too, it's such a good memory. See if you can find some silver or gold sparkly yarn for the string.

We also had rolled up "diplomas" - you could use the same yarn to tie them. For some reason I also totally remember getting M&M's at our graduation - I don't know why but we all thought that was the best thing ever! Although that was in the early 80's - some parents today have issues with candy.

I think the Golden Book idea below is awesome too.
