Need Help with Getting 11 Month Old to Eat Solids

I'm having a terrible time getting my daughter to eat solids. I've tried little pieces of veggies (green beans, peas, carrots, etc.) fruit, and cheerios. She will gag until she spits up everything. I've tried it on an empty stomach and it still happens. Tonight she really acted like she wanted to try it, but it still gagged her. She eats her jar baby food great. She' not picky and eats whatever I give her. I talked with my pediatrician about it this week and he said persistance is the main thing and if she still is having trouble by her 1st b-day he'll refer us to a Occupational Therapist.

Has anyone had the same problems. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
V.

Have you tried the #3 jar foods? They are a little closer to solids, as they have some texture and aren't all smooth like #1 and #2 foods. The main nutrition a baby under a year old should still be from breastmilk or formula, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. As my pediatrician put it: the reason for 'baby food' is to get them used to different flavors and textures because they shouldn't still be exclusively nursing (or taking formula) at two years old. Relax and take it at the pace your baby needs.

My son was very picky as well. He would not eat solids at that age either. If he would finally try something he would spit it out or throw up. He is now 17 months and just now off of baby food. I would just keep trying and getting frustrated. I've found that like with everything else they will do it when they are ready. My pediatrician wasn't concerned about it.
He eats solids now but is still very picky and doesn't eat much of it.

Have you looked into the idea of reflux?  My son presented with these same issue (he stayed on baby food until 16 months) and continued gagging and choking until 4.  The pediatrician didn't worry about it, and as a first time mom, I didn't know any better.  Finally, a nutritionalist suggested reflux, and it turned out he had severe reflux.  His throat was so swollen from the inflamation of reflux, he could hardly swollow anything.  No wonder he gagged and choked so much!A friend of mine had a little boy, who couldn't eat solid food, kept gagging, etc.  He was diagnosed with reflux at 15 months, also.Good luck!

Have you tried the Gerber puffs? The melt in their little mouth faster then cheerios so that they can gum them easier. For my girls, veggies were always harder for them to eat. Have you tried pastas? It is probably a little too early to be concerned about other medical problems that could be causing it but I would agree that if she hasn't figured it out in the next couple of months, that you should have her looked at. My nephew could not eat solid foods at all when he was little. To make a long story short, when he was about 5 they finally figured out that it was his tonsils and adnoids that were causing the problem. He had lots of issues when he was a baby and his was a very extreme case but sometime there are physical problems that can make it a lot harder. Just keep an eye on her and keep encourageing her and you will both figure it out.
