I was pumping this morning when all of the sudden the milk was turning pink and blood was dripping from my nipple after 14 min. of pumping. It startled me. Is this normal. I am used to pumping for months now and I feel no real pain from my breasts although I feel my milk supply has lowered. There is a strange abbrasion on my nipple I don't recall seeing yesterday. My son is now 6 months and starting baby food.....no teeth fully surfaced. Help please!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I have been putting Lansinoh all the time. I guess my baby latched on in a different position and it didn't prove to be too friendly on my breast. I stopped bleeding that evening even though the abrasion was gone immediately after I pumped. Thank you!!

Ouch! Is it possible your nipple was rubbing up against the pump flange?
Breastmilk does promote healing, so I would express a little and rub it into the nipple. Try to be topless or at least braless as much as possible. If you have to wear a bra then I would slather on some lanolin to keep the would from sticking to the fabric. Also slather some on when you have to pump. Nursing your baby should be a problem, as the nipple goes far enough back into their mouths that it shouldn't rub up against anything.

i was bleeding also for a while but found out from doctor that it is very normal if there is any crack at all on your nipplie your milk will turn pink/red. the doctor did tell me that it is NOT dangerous at all for the baby to drink, as odd as that may seem its not harmful for the baby

Hi K.,
Good for you for breast feeding! It is so important! I think it's normal. But your best resource might be La Leche League and of course, your doctor. But La Leche League folks specialize in this area.
Good luck!

Keep lanisoh on it. It should heal. I had great fun with my daugthers two teeth, when she scratched my nipple and caused abraisons. It took about 2 weeks to heal

A blood vessel may have "ruptured" inside your breast/nipple. As far as I know, it's probably no big deal. It happened to a good friend of mine and the nurse/doctor said it's very common in breast feeding moms. Hope this makes you feel better.

I would go see a doctor ASAP and not waste time. It may be nothing but it could be serious. My girlfriend put off going and listened to others advice and they ended up removing both breasts by the time she went in. It is nothing to mess with. Get a professional opinion right away.
