My 8 year old middle son has to do a non-fiction book report project. The book he picked is on the Shetland Sheepdog. Simple enough, but of course there is a catch. He has to make up some type of board game incorporating facts from the book! UGH!
I hate homework assignments where the parent does most of the work :)
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

What about bingo. He could play shetland sheepdog bingo. He could put that at the top of the game board.
Like S-H-E-T-L-A-N-D S-H-E-E-P D-O-G and then put whatever words would go in the squares. So he would call out G-dog or L-summer, whatever the words would be. Hope you find something, W.

Remember the old adage "It's easier to do it myself?" That seems to be the problem. While it would be easier to jump in and do most of the work, it won't help your son. Instead, how about asking him questions that will help him come up with ideas. For example: What did he learn about Shetland Sheepdogs that seem most important to share with the class? (They are herding dogs from Scotland.) What games do the dogs play? (They are full of energy and like to run, jump and dodge.) What board games do you enjoy that incorporate these games?

Well, you get the idea. Remember to keep asking questions and resist the impulse to "do it yourself."

Good luck.

A big piece of poster board and some markers, and you're good to go. Things like "Sheepdogs have poor eyesight, lose a turn" or "Sheepdog chases off wolf, move ahead three spaces", or whatever the actual facts are. (I got those from cartoons, ha!) It should be pretty easy, once he gets going. Good luck!

You have my sympathy! Make it easy on yourself. Have him pick a board game he knows or played when he was littler, like Chutes & Ladders or Candy Land or Operation or Clue. Whichever he knows best. Then have him copy the game design onto a big piece of cardboard or poster board, and then substitute sheep dog information into the squares (or whatever) on the board. Plan to play the same way you'd play the game you're copying. Use poker chips or m&ms or whatever. Good luck!

I like the Bingo idea! You could also print off pictures of Shetland Sheepdogs and do a candy lane game. I would spend a little bit extra though on the thicker posterboard. Goodluck.
