Need Help with 12 Month Old Eating

My 12 month old has a problem eating anything with any lumps in it. He was exclusively breast fed for 6 months and then I introduced gerber foods number 1s and 2s, I have tried the number threes but most time he eats anything with any lump in it like carrots he will throw it up. He eats it and it appears to go down but then he starts to gag and throws up. He eats the number three gerber foods like fruit, squash and sweet potatoes fine so it is not the thickness but the lumps. My other son was eating very good at this point and was eating the little puffs and cherrios but I would not dare offer this one anything like that in fear that he would choke or throw up. He just recently had his 1 year well baby check up and I mentioned it to the doctor who said that he may need to see someone in regards to development. I am really hoping some of you mommas out there have some advice for me because I do not want him to have to go back to the doctor for this.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. I agree that I just need to relax a little and not be so concerned with his eating but hey I am a momma :) He has started eating puffs and I break them up a little, he really likes them and does well picking them up and shoving them in. I have tried small cut up peaches and carrot with not a lot of success so I am still trying to find something that I can put in front of him that I cut small enough that will not choke him - any advice is still welcome :) thanks

Hi

Personally I think it's the baby food that is the problem rather than your child , the number 3 foods are horrible , they are runny with a few lumps here and there , I would skip the baby food and slice up some banana or some strawberries , offer some cooked veggies and pasta and just put it on the tray of the high chair and let him eat.

Good luck

It sounds like he has a paticularly strong gag reflex. I personally think he will outgrow it within a couple of months. Although I think it is always good to rule out a physical problem, it might require some invasive testing. So, I would get an office consult, but I would also give it time before you do any major tests (like funky x-rays where they have to drink dye, etc). Kids are all very different. My five-year old was a gagger - she liked to eat right away at 6 months, but at 1-year, I was still breaking up puffs into 5-6 little pieces :) In contrast, my 17 month old hated to eat solids until she was was around 9-10 months old but then went immediately to finger foods.

My son didn't like the chunky stage 3 foods, however, he ate puffs, cheerios, etc like a champ. Might be worth trying those things. He went to table foods at 10 months - veggies cooked extra soft, ground beef cooked into small pieces (as if for spaghetti sauce).....
