I know of a product called Fletcher's Castoria that my mom used on me as a child. I have not seen it around as I luckily haven't had this problem with my DD. BUt with the good old World Wide Web, I think you can find anything. It always worked on me! Good luck. Also, try lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Mix spinach in with eggs, berries in with oatmeal and the like. Nothing moves like fruit!

IF I was you I would kept her on a soft diet like eggs, applesauce stuff that can pass easier then most foods. I would also give her a glass of OJ each day and try some all brain cereal.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and has suffered with the same problem since the day she was born. She was on special formula and then was on a prescription medicine daily for 6 months. This did not help her and just last week we went to see a specialist in Jackson. They did a rectal biopsy on her and we are now awaiting results to see if she has what they call Hirshburg's disease. It has to do with the nerves being damages in her colon and rectum and they just don't work to tell her to go. If it is Hirshburg's, it can be cured by surgery, but if not, the specialist says we can just aggresively treat it with stronger medications. Of course, I am praying that the latter will be the case, b/c noone wants to see their 2 year old have surgery.

Hennrietta,

Try some Dr. Pepper every morning. This is what I did what my children or prune juice which they hated. My girlfriends child had to have Senacot (sp) every day so you might try that.

Your best bet is to get as much water into him as possible. Fruit juice is also known to help loosen, but may occasionally cause burning if it leads to diarrea. You can even try an all-fruit diet until then, he'll get plenty of vitamins an nutrients, fiber and calcium, so dont worry about him missing out on milk and meat...
If you (and he) can take it, Fleet makes pediatric suppositories. Just try to hold it in for as long as possible - 5-10 minutes is preferrable.
Good luck, I know what a "pain" it can be :]

My neice had developed a big problem with constipation when she was 2. My Sis in Law tried the Rx from the Dr., change of diet IE: rasins, prunes, juices ect. She started using about an ounce of dark Karo syrup each night and my neice has not had any further problems. As long as she takes the Karo, she goes each day and doesn't strain.

We have had this problem with my youngest son now 5 since he was about a year old. We tried everything. Syrup, more fruit, more fiber, massaging the bowels.... nothing worked until the pediatrician put him on Miralax. It was prescription only then. It is now over the counter. We just put 1/2 a teaspoon once a day in his bottle or cup for aweek and then tried to go to once a week but he plugged up again. We had to do it every other day. He has not had to have it so much in the last three years until now. We are currently doing 1 tsp every 3 days. He won't go for days and then he has one I swear that is 12 inches long. It does take a few days for it work as from what I understand Miralax pulls water from the body into the bowels to help soften future movements. Be sure to always have water handy for her to drink. It is a non-addictive product that used to be used only in hospitals. Good luck. I know it is hard to watch your little one struggle so hard.

You are doing the right thing by seeking a doctors help. The only thing I might add is, has she been checked for alergies? I know milk can do this and probably other foods too. Mention it to your doctor; it's worth a shot.

My 7 yr. old has suffered with constipation for about 2 years. Her pediatrician has put her on MiraLax at bedtime, and its working. Apparently her little colon, etc. was so backed up and stretched from holding the stool, that she will be on the MiraLax for a few more months, until everything gets back to "normal". I was hesitant at first, but after an initial fleet enema, the MiraLax has produced results with no side effects. The label says to consult a physician, so check with your ped first. Otherwise, a specialist may order all kinds of invasive tests that would definitely traumatize the baby.

Good Morning,
My daughter has had issues with this recently. She was so constipated that she was vomiting because she couldnt handle anything more on her tummy. We took her to the ER and they did x-rays she was full to the top!! After all kinds of medications, everything from enemas to syrups and everything in between. She didnt go for 4 weeks. The specialist couldnt get her in her primary peds doc didnt know what else to do, so finally they were going to have to do surgary to clear everything. That it when we found Dr. Glasco. He is an amazing Dr. He stimulated her bowl and told us how to change her eating, after a week with him and doing everything he told us to do we had LIFT OFF!!! Now we still do what he tought us to do, belly rubs and eating better more physical activity to get the bowls to move. Now we dont have any problems with her in that area. I would be happy to give you all of his information. He saved my baby from surgery, I know he could help you too.
God bless you,
Andi

I'm not sure if you've tried this or not, but, put a little bit of Caro Syrup in her drink; prune juice/prunes. My grandson is the same way and now has a hernia from straining and we have given him prune juice and it has helped soften it.

Prescriptions? For goodness' sake! Your daughter's ped is completely missing hte most important solutions. No need for prescriptions whatsoever. It's a dietary issue. Just give her more fruits and vegetables (except bananas, white potatoes and by the way keep out white flours/grains like pasta and white rice - *especially* pretzels), and fewer meats. Also give her more water, and a little diluted prune juice. She'll be fine within HOURS :)

When my older daughter (now 11) was about 2-3, and was just on the cusp of potty training, she was getting constipated and it was painful. Her diet was not an issue so we added whole flaxseed to her applesauce about 2x day. The oil from the flaxseed was able to coat the bowel movements and get them out with no discomfort. Obviously, as you noted, it is possible that it's more than standard constipation and I certainly hope that you get answers from the visit on the 25th!

Good Morning. Have you tried Miralax with her? My son gets constipated from time to time and this is what my pediatrician told me to use with him. It is over the counter so no prescription needed. Great thing about it is that it is a powder that is put into any liquid that she will drink and it has no taste! I hope that this will help you out. Godd luck.

My son has had problems with constipation since he was a few months old and he is now 3 1/2. It is an ongoing battle with us and the thing that has worked the best for us is Miralax. I don't know if you have tried this or not but if you haven't it is worth trying. It is a powder that you mix with any liquid and it doesn't have a taste so they don't even know it is there. His GI doctor is the one that put him on it and it is non-habit forming so it doesn't matter how long he stays on it. Also, try increasing her fiber intake. We have started using Fiber One products like pancake mix, pop-tarts, etc. and he usually goes within the hour after eating anything with high fiber. Fruits are good too, they have just never really done the job for us.

Encourage her to drink apple juice and eat apples. Also, I give my grandchildren Fletchers Castoria. It is very good. Be sure she is drinking enough. Best of luck. V.
