My child is going into Kindergarten and is special needs. Diagnosis: Autism-severe delay, non-verbal(only a few baby words),has seizures at least once a month. Currently he's in Developmental Pre-k. I need to find out from any parents or anyone who has gone through this or in the process or who may know what is the best school within the Litchfield Elementary school district for him to go. I'm want to know the good ones(good reputation, kind and caring teachers etc.) and ones I should avoid. Please and thank you for your help!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your responses and help. The parents in his developmental prek program have children that have different delays-mostly social. They all talk and none have autism-I have asked most of them will be going on to transitional kindergarten-my son is the most severely delayed of the bunch. And to the one that responded that its not about what I like... I am doing the best for him because its my child that's why im researching the best school for him..im not going to send him somewhere that has a bad reputation of teachers mistreating or not be able to manage a child like him but has the top notch educators and of course I've spoken with his pre k teacher-she keeps referring me to the school psychologist whom I've spoken with on several occasions. But thanks for trying to help. And ill continue my search as I am going to two schools with different programs in the end of this month. Just wanted to know any personal experiences. Thanks again for those who helped!

Have you gone to the school district's website? Talked to other parents at his current school?

I can only speak for where I come from, you do not get a choice as to what school you go to. They evaluate and they place. With inclusion you go to your home school, no where else unless the evaluating team see a need that only a different school can fill.

If he is already in preschool you should ask them the process and what choices you have.

I would think your Dr.'s office would be a huge help with this or the Developmental Pre-K could guide you to the next step.

Go to your school district and start the process rolling now. He will be put in the class that is appropriate for him. People here do not know your kid. Have you ever spoke to his pre K teacher. I would think you speak to each other occasionally. Just keep in mind just because you might like a particular school, does not mean it is a good one for him. He is the important one here. It is about him and the best education for him. Not about what you like.

I believe AZ has a lot of funding for that type education. My husbands side of the family has a school for autistic children. But I believe they are in the Mesa/Gilbert/Phx area and Litchfield looks like it is West of that area.

Google public resources for autistic education AZ to see if you can find out about state assistance.

If I remember a conversation with her correctly, AZ is one of the better states for assistance.

I am not sure about zoning, as I recall they have a bus and were getting a second bus. So with that, you may have a choice in schools.

Best wishes.
