I took my daughter in for her well child check and her dr said her perineum is stuck together. I guess this is not an unusual problem for young girls and the dr prescribed a estrogen cream to apply to the area daily. My question is what is the best way to go about this? My daughter is 3 and potty trained and very sensitive to pain. I just don't want to end up having to hold her down. This is a sensitive area and I don't want to hurt her or scar her for life. Are there alternatives to the cream? Please share your adivce, thanks.

What can I do next?

I'd like to see what other people say. My dd has this too. My dr refuses the cream citing that it causes cancer later. My dd is in so much pain because it keeps reattaching and ripping open again...

HI M.,
My daughter went through the same thing. She was a little younger though, so it wasn't much of a struggle. Seems like we treated that area for about 2 months. The cream is very mild and doesn't cause any pain. I guess I would suggest letting her "help" and maybe have rewards like when potty training. Skittles, m & m's, etc.. Good luck, it will be fine.

My daughter had this same issue when she was younger. She would occassionally get irritated in the area because urine would get stuck inside. Our doctor prescribed the estrogen cream as well, but I chose not to use it. I heard that it could cause some problems because you are giving hormones to a child. I just made it a point that she needed to wipe very well. She is now 9 and doesn't have any problems at all. Once your child starts going through the puberty stage the area will open up on its own. I would suggest not to use the cream at all. Imagine ALL the issues that we, as women, face when putting unnatural hormones in our bodies. It can only be worse for a child.

So sorry- my daughter had this issue as a baby. At her age I would tell her you are going to put "lotion" there to help her. As far as I know that is the only way to open that up. Try to make it more fun by distracting her with TV or a treat or her toys etc...

Hi M.,

When I worked at Cook's in Fort Worth, whenever we had to do procedures such as exams or inserting catheters, we would first show them what we were going to do on a doll to help explain what we would be doing since they can't really see what was happening "down there". For many, it got them interested and less afraid. I don't know, but maybe if she likes dolls, maybe get her a special one for that and give it a try? I don't have personal experience with this, just a suggestion. You sound like you're gentle and sensitive to her feelings, so I'm sure whatever you do, she'll be fine.

Could you teach her to do it herself? DD is 2 1/2, and we recently had to put cream on an infected cut, which she said was "owie." So we had her do it herself (with close supervision, of course), so she could be gentle, and b/c she knows what hurts and what doesn't. I know it could be a bit more difficult in the area you're dealing with, b/c it can be hard to see on yourself, but then again, kids are pretty flexible! It might be worth a try, in any case.

My daughter had the same issue. Our doctor noticed it at her 1 yr old check up. We weren't very faithful about putting on the cream and it has taken a long time to finally stay open. She just turned 5 and I believe we are finally over that all. I would just have her lie down and I will check put some from my finger on her. She would complain a bit, but I dont know of any other way to get it done. Every doctor I asked about this said this is the best way to do it. Since we just recently have stopped doing this, she remembers. But she does not seem scarred by it or even talk about it. You only need a small dab of cream so I suggest just doing it quickly and not making a big deal about it. But i do suggest being faithful about putting on the cream. Many times we let it go for too many days and the whole got so closed up she said it hurt to pee. Good luck. Feel free to email back if you have any more questions!

My daughter had this issue. The cream won't cause pain and will work quickly. My daughter was only a year and a half, and I added the cream when I changed her diaper. If your daughter won't lay still for you, you could apply the cream while she's asleep if she's a heavy sleeper. It only took three or four swipes of the estrogen cream for my daughter's issue to be resolved. It will be fine for you, too, I'm sure! Feel free to email me if you need to.

my older daughter had the same thing. the dr. said that he could prescribe the estrogen cream, but that when you stop using it, the adhesion returns. he recommended that we just let her grow out of it, which she did around age 5 1/2. it never caused any problems.

2 of my daughters had the same problem. After their bath we would put the cream on a cotton swab and apply it. Very gently I would stretch the area. I always took the time to explain to them why we were putting on the medicine and to never never let anyone else and it was not okay for anyone else to touch them in this area. It isn't really a painful process for them. I think she and you will do fine with it. Eventually it will open up and you won't have to worry with it anymore, sometimes it takes a while. Good luck!

That happened to my oldest daughter when she was about that age. I just told her we had to put some medicine on her bottom and had her lay down with her knees apart and did a quick swipe. This may seem like a lot of info but I let her spread the area apart so she was participating, in a way, and it felt less like it was just being done to her. You don't have to rub it in, just get it on the area. It doesn't hurt at all and the cream works pretty fast. I only remember having to do it for about a week or so. If you don't make a big deal out of it, neither will she. Good luck!

My little girl had this condition, but we found it earlier, when she was about 18 months old, so it wasn't so much a problem.

How long are you supposed to use the cream? Is your child capable of putting it on herself, like after bath. You could make it as routine as brushing her teeth.

I promise you that soon the condition will clear.

My daughter has had this issue since she was 6 months old. It has caused UTI on a few occasions. When she was 6 months old she spiked a fever and we went to the hospital. The nurses "ripped" her open to get urine. I did not know she was closed up down there as bad as she was until we went to our pediatrician the following Monday. She HATES for anyone to touch her down there. The only way we somewhat calm her now to put the cream on is to give her own qtip with diaper cream on it and let her do some herself. Then we have to hold her down to put the real cream on. It makes the area red. If anyone has any natural ways to fix this issue please let me know. I hate having to put estrogen and hormones into her body so young.

Our daughter has this too! We had her lay on her back and pull her legs towards her head and I already had the cream, a good amount, on my pointer figer and would wipe it quickly! It didn't always go on neatly but we had her put her panties on and that was it. It wasn't painful for it but it tickeled so we were sensitive to that. We had to do this off and on for a couple of years and she finally outgrew the problem.

My daughter had the same issue -- it was no big deal. With minimum treatment your daughter should be fine.

With the age that she is, that situation may make her uncomfortable, and she will probably feel awkward when she gets older. I would suggest teaching her how to apply it, and play the close my eyes game. When my daughter (age 7) has something in a private area, I have always explaind to her how to do it, then i cover my eyes and say ok go, i'm not looking. it gives her a sense of privacy and confidence. she too had the same problem, and her doctor found it when she was 4 months old. i applied the cream for a week, and stopped. It corrected itself over time.
