Hi B.,
My son had similar problems when he was her age, and I got sick of the doctors telling me it was growing pains. I asked for a referral to see another doctor. He had an MRI, and saw two specialists. He had a disorder called knock knees. While this is probably not what your daughter has, it took me insisting he see a specialist to get him diagnosed. He had to wear orthopedic shoes for 3 years. I was later told by the surgeon that if I didn't get him help when I did, they would have had to do surgery to correct his legs (which was them having to break, and reset his legs!). The bottom line is your her mother, and you know she is hurting. A doctor only sees them for a few minutes, and moves on to the next patient. I would trust your gut and ask for a referral to a specialist. OR, if your insurance doesn't require a referral, just make an appointment with an pediatric orthopedic doctor. Oh, checking for the rheumetoid arthritis is a great suggestion too. It is a simple blood test. Good Luck! and remember, trust your gut.

My almost 3 y/o has been complaining about pain in his leg and foot when it seems like he done nothing to cause it. It also has me worried because I don't think it's growing pains at such a young age. I've been considering taking him in to the doc to have xrays, blood work, and possible request an MRI or CT scan. I don't think any of that is unreasonable. Ask for a referral to someone else. That way your insurance will still pay for it, and you get peace of mind, and some real answers.

Please follow up on this as I would like to know what you find out.

I don't know what it might be but you can INSIST on blood tests, vitamin D deficiency maybe? Or a referral to a rheumatologist or some other specialist. (not sure what you need, really) If your doctor tries to pass it off again just politely say you want to see someone else to rule out other things. If your doctor is any good they will be willing to work with you on this. If not, find a new doctor!!

Good Luck!!

B.,

I have a 5 year old that this has been happening to since he was three as well, in the beggining i felt hopeless bcuz nothing would help him at all. As he got older it wouldnt happen as much. I also took him countless times to the doctor and got the same answer every time.....growing pains! Now I find if he has an extremely active day, hell wake up with them but tylenol melt a ways takes care of it quick. Hang in there it will begin to get better i promise. Dont worry yourself too much unless she begins to aquire other problems along with it. Feel free to email me if you wanna talk about it anymore. Much luck.

I agree that you should bring her in again. If the doctor brushes it off again as just growing pains, I would definitely get a second opinion. Maybe see if they will refer you to an orthopedic specialist. Or try going to another pediatrician.

Growing up my sister had regular bad leg growing pains also. she was the only one out of four of us to get these pains that would often waken her from sleep. She is now 5'11".

here is some helpful advice, but trust your gut.
