Hi Molly,
Health care these days is extremly expensive...but there is a county funded plan out there that will cover your son...you just have to find it...easier said than done.. :( but for you and your husband...prab. not... However, you can apply for an individual plan with a high deducable that will cover you in case of an accident. (again, approval is going to take a while..ie July 1 like Kaiser.) If for some reason during this time you are diagnosed with a disease you WILL be covered by the new insurance with your husbands company. Group insurnace is GUARANTEE ISSUE, meaning exactly what it says. If your husbands company offers only a PPO, you will not be covered for the first SIX months without prior coverage, but if they offer an HMO you will, REGARDLESS of pre-existing conditions immediatly.
With that being said, a check up at a doctors office for a cold, flu symptoms, etc etc USUALLY only runs about $100-$120. I am in no way saying not to worry about the coverage for the next three months and just keep your fingers crossed, but????...
Even a high deductabe PPO is going to be expensive, especially for two adults. $600 a month for two people would be a steal...honestly. Anything much cheaper would not be rich enough in benefit to be worth the cost...in a car accident your auto coverage will be responsible for the medical costs, and your health insurnace wouldn't pay anyways. tell your husband not to use any power tools for the next three months....(any home accidents are not coverege by home owners ins..haha)
I hope some of my info is helpful in your decision making process...let me know if you have any questions..I am a licensed Life and Health Insurnace Agent... :)
