Hi
My 15 month old has always had a lot of hair and it always gets tangled and fuzzed up in the back. She goes to bed all nice and silky, and wakes up with a knotted halo. It is so hard to comb through. Does anyone know of a good detangler for kids?

So What Happened?

Wow! Thanks for all the great ideas. I will definately try them. I never had this problem with my now 3 1/2 year old, and my 15 month old has always had this problem. I do use the Baby Basics which is better than water, but I still feel like I am working way too hard. It helps holding the hair close to her scalp so as i comb I dont pull constantly on her head. In the last few nights I have also found something that distracts her enough for me to work on the knots (sitting in sink and playing with the tooth brushes etc). Her hair is only to her sholders, but I may try the low pig tails after her bath at night until I find something that works on her hair. Right now she does not sleep with a pillow, but I think the silk/satin idea is great as well. Again, THANKS!

WAL-MART has a great generic detangler for $1.50-2.00. It works as well as No More Tangles, but for lots less.

I have used a few detanglers-Infusiam 23, Pantene, Suave have all worked good for me. My two daughters have used them and they work real good. They make the hair soft and shiny. Good luck.

Johnson and Johnson makes a detangler spray/conditioner. I've used a lot of different things on my son (and various other kids!), and this one seems to always work well! Just as good as the expensive treatments.

I have had great success with the Johnson's no more tangles. It's a creme in a green tube and you can use it on wet or dry hair. My daughter also gets that fuzzy nest in the back of her head and it's always worked with no problems or tears.

Hello..

I have two sons ages 6 and 9 who wake up with terrible bedhead! I use Paul Mitchell Taming Spray for kids. It is wonderful and smells great.Takes all the knots and tangles right out. I have tried Suave detangler and it doesn't work as well as PM. I buy it at Sports Clips in Plainfield. Hope this helps!

Hi J.,

I too had the same problem with my daughter & my hair--she is three, I stumbled accross this product at Whole Foods (I know!!)although I am a very frugal person, I love these childrens products from a company called Rainbow--it is a spray detangler-& I use it on my daughter & myself, on wet & dry hair--since then I also use their bubble bath & soap for kids(both body for bath) & hand in the bathroom--I love their products a little higher in price, than the J&J (which is still very good) I just am really happy with them, the spray detangler is a godsend (& I use it too--my hair is down to my waist by the way!)Hope that helps!

I have to braid my daughters hair at night for that very same reason. It's easier to braid than trying to use a detangler in the morning.

My 3 yr old has very fine, straight, long hair. When she gets out of bed, it looks like she stuck her finger in an electric socket. We have tried the braid to no avail - all the little pieces of hair frizz up, she loves the kinky look and throws a fit if I try and comb it - not worth the fight. Anyway, we have tried the cheap stuff that everyone else has mentioned and it works, but I feel like I'm breaking more hair than actually detangling it. What works the best for us, is 1. some expensive stuff from our hairdresser: Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Repair Rescue. You can find it on the internet. It works best when put in wet hair (its like a leave in conditioner). 2. a great spray detangler at Sally Beauty Supply called Silken Child Leave-In Detangler Good luck!!

I have two daughters with difficult hair. I found the nicest detangler is the American Girl one from Bath and Body Works. It comes in a lavender container and smells like sweet vanilla. My kids like it and it works better than Johnson's and Johnson's. I even use it one myself sometimes!

I have curly hair and instead of adding products I use a silk pillow case. Satin also works. so if you don't want to add chemicals try changing the pillow case cover instead

Have you tried anything yet? I always try the cheap stuff first, if it works, great, if not, no big expense. We have a dollar store detangler and it works fine on my girls.

I'll also echo the braid recommendation.

You've gotten a lot of responses but I thought I'd ad something. I have 3 girls and lots of the same issues. I'm not sure how long your little one's hair is but getting a trim sometimes gets the dead ends off that cause tangles. Also, we used a product called Afraid Knot from Great Clips that we like. Good luck.

I just mix a few pumps of conditioner and water and put in a spray bottle. It works great as a detangler, and it costs much less then the store bought detangler. My 7yr old has thin, straight hair that gets tangled up as well.

Start with Infusium 23 in a spray bottle, mix with some water and a squirt of your standard conditioner. Shake well. If you need it to be stronger, use less water. We also use a detangler comb that you can buy from Sally Beauty Supply for less than $2. They have Infusium 23, as well as a Generic version that works just as well.

Good Luck, M.

My kids love the Johnson and Johnson No More Tangles spray. However, this is an after tangles are already created. Are you using conditioner on her - I know the baby washes/shampoos really don't help with tangles. We like Pantene two in one shampoo and conditioner. It's fresh smelling without being too fragrant.

Also, I've heard silk pillow cases help - it may be worth a shot.

Finally, what about giving her two low, loose ponytails (like right below & behind her ears as to not rub on her head) while she sleeps? Maybe those soft terrycloth syle pony ties might help her not get loose hair all tangled?

Anyway, try the spray on conditioner, it's been great for us.

The cheap stuff does just as good as the pricey stuff. Go for Loreal kids or the Breck stuff. One is 2 bucks, the other one. But they work about the same.

My daughter gets the worst bed head. We have always used the Suave detangler and it seems to work well. We tried the Johnsons buddies, but it gave her a rash. The one thing that makes a HUGE difference - more than the detangler - is a SATIN PILLOWCASE...that is if your daughter keeps her head on the pillow!! :) My daughter finally does and it is amazing the difference in her hair. In the long run it is a cheaper option too...I got 2 satin pillowcases at Target for 9.99.

Good Luck on your tangle free quest!

Hi J.,
I have used Suave kids detangling spray for several years now on my daughter's hair. It always looks great when she goes to bed, then it looks like a bird's nest in back when she wakes up in the morning! The spray really works well; spray then carefully comb through starting near the bottom and working your way up. It also works really well after washing her hair in the tub when it's all tangled. Hope this helps you! C.
