I have a very good guy friend that is turning 50. I want to decorate his yard/house so he will be surprised when he leaves for work on his birthday. He has a great sense of humor and is singlo so nothing is off limits. It needs to be tasteful because I don't want to embarass him in front of his neighbors either. Anyone have any ideas outside of the sign that says so-n-so is 50?

My SIL did the BEST thing I had ever seen for my husband when he turned 40.. She got bags of Top Soil and made a "grave" in our front yard and placed a dead potted plant on top, then she made a "Headstone" out of Foam core and Painted it Grey and Wrote :

RIP to your youth
"John"
1960 to 2000

We laughed and laughed.. People drove by and took photos.

I am sure you could apply this to a birthday, too. My neighbors once got "forked". Hundreds of plastic forks stuck all over the front yard.

Not a yard thing, but fun!
Put a sign on his bumper that says "Honk--I'm 50!" He'll be wondering why everyone is blowing their horns on his way to work!

I'd would do something with a graveyard theme (tombstones, Grim Reaper, etc.) and black balloons.

My neighbor had the cutest thing ever, Someone made a yard sign of a big pig and then there were 50 little rubber pigs all over the front yard. On the big pig it said someone squealed, Lilly is 50 today. Most of the neighbors were out taking pictures of it it was so cute.

I'd TP the house, do the forks, shoe polish his car and tie baloons to his mailbox. Vandalism is fun! and cheap!

For my 40th a friend put a flock of 40 pink flamingos in my front yard. He actually bought the flamingos, but I've heard there are now places you can rent them from. When another friend turned 50th, her husband took one of her grade school pics and had it put on a poster. I forget what the wording was but something about turning 50. Instead of having it in front of their house, he put the all along her route to work, in the elevator at her office and then of course in her office. Pretty funny.

Is 50 over the hill? You could do an "over the hill" theme and maybe some type of "hill" he actually has to drive over to get out of the driveway. Also check in the party stores or the Dollar Store (I actually prefer Dollar General) to see what they have available for inexpensive decorations - that may help you make a decision. Someone decorated my truck once and they shoe polished the windows (they make all kinds of colors now) and taped paper plates with streamers coming off to the inside of the wheel - that was pretty cool looking. Good luck!!

I've seen the flamingos with a sign that says, "The flock is in shock XXX is 50" (or whatever milestone b-day).

Have fun!! I think more adults should have fun with b-days... Your only as old as you feel!!! :-)

Put a 'For Sale' sign in his front yard....a real real estate sign...Ebby Halliday....R/E Max....anything. Then attach a handwritten sign to the top corner that says something like .... "Moving to Restland" (insert the name of a local cemetary).

This could be a lot of work - but still a lot of fun.
I sometimes make cards or posters for close friends on big birthdays - that is a collage of pictures. For example, I would find 50 pictures that represent "50" - could be a jersey or a race car with the number 50, could be a picture of the top artist or album in 1950 (or 50 years ago), famous people born or cars made that year, an interstate 50 sign, a band (like 50 cent), a 50 cent piece, a 50% off coupon, a 50 mph speed sign, etc. Just do a google search for "50" or "fifty", "1961", etc. You can always throw in a baby picture from 50 years ago. Get creative.
Instead of making a collage, you could print the 50 pictures, attach them to stakes or skewers and plant them all over his yard!
Have fun.
