Does anyone have any experience with organic pest control? I need to rid our house of a few pests but worry about the chemicals effects on our children and dog. Any recomendations would be appreciated.
For ants you can sprinkle good old fashioned corn meal near their path. Bits will be taken back to the colony and when the queen eats it, it'll swell and ... well, no more ant colony. Manzano Pest Management, ###-###-####, is a very good service I've used. Also, sprinkling or diffusing a high quality essential oil will do the trick. No side effects to pets or children. I recommend Young Living essential oils. For info, call ###-###-####.

We have used Arizona Organic Pest Control for 5 years. Their # is ###-###-#### and website is www.arizonaorganic.com. We have 2 boys ages 2 and 5. The pest control co. comes every other month for $81 per treatment. If you have a problem in between treatments, you can call them back for free. We typically don't see bugs inside and don't treat inside. We do see a few dead or nearly dead roaches or crickets in the mornings inside within a few days to a week after treatment and then only for a few days. We also have a desert tortoise in the backyard who eats grass, flowers, and weeds, and she has been fine.

We stopped using pest control about 5 years ago due to unemployment. What happened was fantastic...we have lizards... and wolf spiders (I know, I know, you don't want them, but they are voracious eaters) between the 2, we never have crickets or other creepy crawlies in the house. For the ants, we just go over to the Bug and WeedMart and get granules for the ants to eat. Funny how the environment can actually take care of itself if allowed to flourish!

I started using Diatematious earth. It is sold at Lowe's or Home depot in the pool chemical isle. It's a white powder and you spread it around the base of your house. Also, cinnamon works around your door or entry ways. Haven't seen a scorpion since I started using and only a couple of earwigs which I use to get invaded with. If you ever watch news channel 3 in the AM, Dave the Garden Guy is where I learn my tips from. He has a website and several books he's written. Good luck.

The best solution to a cockroach infestation is never to have one. (As they say: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of roaches.) Effective prevention includes eliminating or minimizing moisture, food sources, and entry points for your insect friends. Be sure to drain sinks, tubs, and showers of standing water, regularly mop up condensation that collects under the fridge, and consider emptying your cats' water bowl at night, when roaches are most active. Don't keep food -- human or cat -- out, empty the trash often, don't leave unwashed dishes lying about, and sweep and vacuum frequently. You might also consider caulking or otherwise eliminating gaps around drainpipes and the like to prevent the buggies from coming back.

My pest control says they are organic, however, we still only have them spray outside of the house. We used to have the inside sprayed and I hated the smell. So for the past 3.5 years we have only done outside. We have had pretty good success with this and have a limited number of scorpians and spiders in the house.

So I am just assuming that you live in New Mexico. I am still unsure about how this site works. I use Preventive Pest Control and have since both of my girls were little. They are 5 1/2 and 4 and I have two dogs. I still use them and as long as the pest spray has time to dry, which is pretty quick in the spring, it won't harm them at all. My dogs and my children have never had any issues or reaction to it and have accidentally stepped in it.

We use the company All Guard Pest Control. They said the chemical they use comes from a flower, but doesn't harm pets or children.
I also recommend getting those little "sonic" devices you can plug into your outlets. They've worked great in our home.
Good luck!

I've heard good things about Arizona Organic Pest Control:
Yes. But I signed up for products with which to make my own safe and non-toxic bug spray. You can buy your own comparable products or go to Workathomeunited.com/kathier to sign up to receive all sorts of safe, non-toxic stuff for your health and home. These are mainly Melaleuca tea-tree oil products. Make bug spray from a combination of 1/4 cup of Sol-u-Mel, 5 drops of T36-C5, a tsp of Tough and Tender, and 14 oz. of water. It costs a fraction of commercial sprays.

Vinegar is good for keeping the spiders away. Essential peppermint oil is good for the bugs. I tried it one summer in the small cracks between the door and wall. I was bug free for the summer and the next. It is also good for keeping the mice away. Peppermint oil is also good for lowering fevers and upset stomachs for the children. Vinegar is also good for cleaning the house naturally without the harmful smells of Clorox. It takes away the mold in the bathtub, cleans the toilet, natural disenfectant. I clean my house with it and sometimes the vinegar is too strong so I will add peppermint, lavender or lemon essential oils to the mixture of vinegar and a little dish soap to clean. Hope this works!

Hi T.,
Diatamacious earth is VERY good about keeping the ants out of the house. It takes the moisture out of their bodies, so they WON'T come in!! I've tried it out in California and it WORKS GREAT!! I've also used salt to keep the ants out too. I have a little one and like you, I don't like to use chemicals. Hope this helps!

I have heard that chrisantymums wrong spelling, was a wonderful way to control pests. Whether you crush them up and let them soak in water or not, I don't really know, but I'm sure if you googled the flower it may be able to tell you more. I know of someone who only uses it on their garden and has the most delicious vegetables.

We have used and recommended R.P. Streiff. They use a solution that safe for children and pets. It has been a couple of years since we used them that I cannot recall what exactly that they use but that it was something from the tree that is a natural repellent. Here is their website: http://www.rpstreiff.com/html/contact_us.html
