I have a friend who says she isn't very crafty. Her six year old daughter is going to be in the school play and needs a ladybug costume. Any ideas on simple costume design?

What can I do next?

I actually made one this past year... very easy... Black pants (stretch look better), black top, black gloves. For the wings, I took 2 peices of cardboard that were shaped like toilet seats, covered them with red material (glued them with a hot glue gun), hot glued black dots (black material)... hot glued the wings overlapping each other, and then on the opposite side I glued some black stretch bands with velcro, to attach them to her arms. Came out very cute!
Black hairspray and red lipstick finished it off! Good luck!

Check out Family Fun on the internet, as I saw a pattern for a ladybug on their website a couple of Halloweens ago, and I am pretty sure that they keep things like that available.

Blessings to you,
K.

I am not at all crafty either. One Halloween, my daughter wanted to be a M&M. We went to a fabric store and bought some heavy duty felt (comes in red), cut it into 2 large circles and sewed them inside out. This makes the body of the M&M or ladybug. Prior to sewing, make marks on fabric to allow room for head, arms, a lot of extra room at the bottom so her child can walk. Then put one circle on top of the other, making sure that the pretty color in turned inside out. Once sewn, turn the outfit inside out so that the pretty color is showing with no seams. (I hope this makes since. Kinda hard to explain it on email.) The circle went to her lower thighs so I got her leotards. Also, she can get some cheaper black felt to do the dots and glue them on with fabric glue. The kids could probably do the dots! Once the holes for the arms, head and legs were correct, we turned them inside out again to make a seam for them as well. I got together with her friends mom and we made them together in one evening. We had a blast. They were both M&M and were so cute and the costumes looked professional. Very easy to make...the only difficulty is prior to sewing, do the math to figure where head, arms and legs go, then sew. Very inexpensive project, especially when we couldn't find them in the stores!!!! Also, since there may be other ladybugs in the play, make templates for the body circle so they will all be approximately the same size.

black leotard and tights, black shirt/shorts or pants would work too...with a sandwich board of black foam board or poster board cut like wings... or wings alone with elastic to hold them in place.... put large red circles on the wings... if she needs antenna.. use a black beany hat and add pipe cleaner antenna to the top.

A red leotard painted with black fabric paint for the spots should do fine. It should be OK to wear with black pants. Or even a shirt would do. Don't stress about the costume - it's over quickly.

This may not sound clever but it works. Take a large black trash bag. Cut out a place for her head and arms. Then glue, staple, etc. large red dots that you can trace out of red contruction paper or felt. Trace the dots off of glasses, bowls, or even pots depending on how big the child is. All it takes is one trip to the local Walmart. :)

I don't want to overload you w/ advice, but a hot glue gun is a lifesaver for stuff like this b/c it dries so fast. I'd get a big red sweatshirt and draw a black line down the center of the back to look like the wings when they're folded. Then hot glue black felt dots on either side of the line on the back. Then glue a big oval of black felt on the front for the tummy. Headband w/ pipe cleaners for the antennae and black stretch pants under the sweatshirt.

Get a piece of red cardboard or poster board, cut it into an oval (or get white and color it red). Spray paint a few paper plates black and tape or glue them in random spots. Make holes in the posterboard and make straps like a backpack. Have child wear long sleeved black shirt and black gloves. Get a headband and twist two black pipe cleaners on and sticking up for antennae. good luck and have fun!

Sounds fun! I love to make costumes out of sweatshirts. Start with a baggy red one - long like a dress and fabric glue black felt spots to the back. Black tights and shoes would work along with it. As far as wings posterboeard is good. But it might be easier to go to Wal-Mart or the Disney Store to look for princess accessories. Good luck!

I have made a lady bug custume for 3 little girls l as well as my own little one; it is easy and cute. By red felt by the yard cut 2 ovoids that will be big enough to cover back. Cut 2 pieces of elastic the length, the length will depend on how gib the childs arms are around. sew the 2 ovoids together , stop about 5-8 inches before completely sewn, then turn the oviod inside out so the seam is now inside, stuff with batting and hand sew or machine sew the opening. Cut several black felt hole and either hot glue, sew or I used iron on interfacing . Attatch the elastic to form loops to hold costume on. for attenta attach black pipe cleaners to black head band for cuteness attach pom pom to top. Hav eyour child wear black body suit and tights and it is the cutest thing you hav ever seen. The first time I made it it only took 2 hours to maek complete back, now I can do it in under an hour.

maybe a red and black polka dot shirt and black pants with a headband turned into antennae. If you buy the shirt a little big it can be stuffed to look round like a ladybug. You could even buy a cheap one and paint the black dots onto it. For the antennae you can use pipe cleaners and tinfoil. Just put a small (light weight) fabric around them so they don't weigh down. Hope this helps!

I saw a cute ladybug costume at the local school play. The little girls wore black tops and bottoms (could be a black leotard and tights) and then a cape that was black with red spots. You can use black felt cut into a cape and then use fabric glue to attach red felt circles to the cape. A headband with with the springs attached can be used for the antennae (party/costume stores should have these).

She could do a red t-shirt oversized t-shirt (as mentioned already with tissue paper stuffed in it to make it fullt) with black tights. Do pipe-cleaner antanae. For the wings she could get large pieces of cardboard and cut them into two large half-circles. Then paint the cardboard black or red and glue large red or black felt circles (oposite color of cardboard) to make the spots. Pin or sew wings onto shirt or thread a large ribbon through top of wings and tie around shoulders/neck) to hold them on. Hope this helps.

black tights and an oversized red shirt with black felt "spots" glued on with fabric glue. Or she could make the spots with fabric paint. That would take longer since she could do one side at a time. A viser with twisted piping and pom-poms for the antlers. These items can be found at a craft store such as Michael's. They even have T-shirts.

Hope this helps.

Have fun.

Either a plain large t-shirt in green or red, glue on big black felt circles, perhaps this might do. If she wants to be really creative, then how about an oversized t-shirt stuffed with tissue paper to make it puffy. The t-shirt would have to be gathered at the bottom in back with a rubber band (they come in green or red), or a clip for gathering shirts or whatever. Green or red socks could complete the outfit. Oh, and how about pipe cleaners for the antennaes ? Possibly a head band with pipe cleaners wrapped around it ? All this stuff could be color coordinated and purchased at the Dollar General !

Hope this was helpful.

Best wishes, I'm certain all will turn out just fine.

Hi K., buy a red t-shirt long enough to cover her hiney. Cut out 6 black felt circles. Apply them symmetrically on the back with iron on fusible web. Cut a small hole in the hem of the t-shirt on the underside and thread narrow elastic through so that it is snug on her body below the hiney. Wear black tights or leggings. Lightly crunch up newspaper--plastic groc bags would work but might be too hot if she has to wear the costume for long. Stuff it into the back of the costume while she is wearing it to make it a little poufy in the back only. If she doesn't like the feel of the crunched up paper next to her skin, wear a tank top or t-shirt so the paper is between the 2 shirts. Don't forget a headband with 2 black antenna made from craft chenille stems(pipe cleaners). (If mom or dad has a red T the right size, turn it inside out if it has words or pics. Safety pin the black spots from the inside so they are not permanent. Also safety pin the elastic into the hem. After the play is over, parent gets shirt back.) Fly away, Ladybug!
ps. The number of spots on a ladybug indicate it's age ;)C.

Option1
Items you will need: (Hit your return key to start a new line),Black leotard ,Black tights ,Red fabric (felt works best) ,Black felt (for dots) ,Headband ,Black pipe cleaners,Pom Poms (red or silver) ,Pillow stuffing
Instructions:
Make a large oval from the red fabric.
Make a second oval, slightly smaller than the first.
Stitch or hot glue the edges of the ovals together (leaving room to stuff), allow to dry.
Stuff the ovals to form the back of the lady bug.
Stitch or hot glue the remaining part.
Cut circles from the black felt and hot glue or stitch to the red oval, allow to dry.
Stitch to back of black leotard.
Use pipe cleaner and headband to make antenna and apply pom poms to end of antennas.

Dress child in tights, leotard, and headband.
Other information to consider:
Use stockings and stuffing to create additional legs.

----------------------------------
Option 2 would try this with a brown paper grocery bag and stuff with crumbed newspaper, damped the outside of the paper bag with water and try and shape into a half circle. When dry paint with temper paint and use a magic marker to make the black dots about 3" circles. You chould use elastic to attach to waist or belt. A head band and pipe cleaners for antenna. Children have such an imagination they will believe this is beautiful. The first Option is much more prettier. But please first add up the supplies for Option 1 for everything and it may be cheaper to just buy a Lady Bug costume from www.buycostumes.com . I also buy costumes after Halloween at 75% off , then store for next year. They also make dress for girls and so cheap.

GOOGLE IT! LOL It's amazing what you can find on the internet. Or, a headband with pipe cleaners and styrofoam balls painted black for her antenna, and posterboard painted and cut to shape tied with ribbon to the child's back. The child can wear a black leotard and black tights under it. (Those can be found at dance supply places. Try the Yellow Pages for that)

I bought a red tutu at a dance store, cut 30 black 3" circles from felt and glued them on my daughter's red t-shirt and tutu ... She wore red shorts and I put red sock and black shoes on her - it was adorable. I has som ewings from big bots but she didn't like to wear them and it didn't lesson the cuteness of the costune. Felt is a bit difficult to cut so plan to spend 2 or 3 hours cutting but no skill required!

Good luck!

Try this! Get about 1 yard of red felt. Cut 2 large squares of the felt. On both sides, sew a seam about 2/3 up from bottom. (Leave other 1/3 open for the child's arm.) Press the seam with an iron and even press the arm hole sides down. Flip the bottom up about 1" and sew it around and leave a small space to run a thin strip of elastic in the hem. You want this to snug up around the child's legs, but not too tightly. Flip the tops down about 1" and sew each side. Run a thin strip of elastic to fit around the child's neck. It needs to be loose enough for the child's head to get through. Using about 1/4 of a yard of black felt, make a 1" long black strip to run down the center back of the costume. Hot glue it on, along with 6 black circles - 3 on each side. Get the child some black tights, a long black sleeve shirt, and a black ski hat (no ball on it). Get 2 pipe cleaners and curl the top. Stick the end about 1" into the hat and bend it. Hot glue it in place. You can paint some cheeks on her face. Good luck!
