Need Camera Help - DSLR

I'm hoping there are some people on here that know a little about camera's.

My husband has a friend who has a Sony A200, it would come with 2 lens, I believe a 55mm and 300mm lens.

What would you pay for something like this? We've asked the friend numerous times how much he wants for it, but he just keeps saying he needs to check eBay. (Which he hasn't apparently) Also he bought this off of ebay himself about a couple years ago. He let us have it for a bit so we play around with it and see if I like it. This would be the first time for me owning a DSLR. I have gone out to eBay, but was hoping there were some people who were familiar with camera's who could give me their opinions.

What can I do next?

No more than $300. Since it's double used... I wouldn't want to spend over $200.

It's an OKAY dslr, but it's not what I would get as an entry level DSLR. I'd get either a Nikon or Cannon which both have SOLID/GOOD entry level DSLRs that you can either stay there with, or move up with that won't have the lag or quality issues that will drive you up the wall.

I would never get a Sony. Last I checked Sony doesn't know how to make a camera. I wouldn't pay more than 100 for the camera you described.

I have a Nikon and stick with recommending those.

There is no set price for used camera equipment, however, you have to take into consideration that the sensor will only take so many photos before it goes out. As well, technology changes. How many megapixels is th camera and how does that compare to what is available today? Does it video as well? That is now available for most DSLR's today. Being that it was purchased used, you have no way to find out how often it was used. It is possible it was a photography enthusiast or someone who purchased the camera for a trip and never used it again.

My assumption is that eBay is going to come in a little lower than a camera shop selling used equipment.

As for the lenses, you should know what F stop they are. The lower the number the better. 2.8 would be wonderful, 4.5 ok, and 5.0 not so special.

With that said, I would offer anywhere from $20 - 35% of the new price, depending on the variables.

My SIL who is a professional photographer says to stay away from Sony, and to stick with Nikon or Canon. I have a few photographer friends and they all use Canons. We got the Nikon and love it. I think now a days cameras hold value like computers, not very well. I wouldn't spend more than a couple hundred, and that's a stretch.

stay away from Sony at this level of camera. Stick with either the Canon Rebel or the Nikon entry level DSLR. Anything but these two and I think you may regret your decision.

I also have a Nikon with the same lenses and haven't heard great things about Sony. However, I have some amazing amateur shots with my Nikon. When I got the camera and 55mm lense for Christmas 4 years ago, it was $450. The other lense I got for Mother's Day 5 months later was $250. So it was $700 total.

I did a ton of research a few months ago before I bought my DSLR camera. Sony is not a good camera maker, Canon's are great! I bought the Canon Rebel T3 and absolutely love it. It is so easy to use and takes great pics.
