Need Birthday Party Ideas for a 6 Year Old!

My 5 year old daughter is turning 6 next month (the day after Valentines!) and I am at a loss for what type of party to plan for her this year. She's very social and wants to invite most of her classmates (maybe not the boys!) and some of her out of school friends. We've done the bouncy places, but that just doesn't seem right for a 6 year old party. My daughter wants to have a party at our house, but I don't think my sanity could take that!! It could be an option though! She's very firm on the theme of her party, dogs or Littlest Pet Shop. Help!! We may even be having a joint party with another friend, but that mom is in the same boat as me - clueless! Any suggestions?!

What can I do next?

You can get all kinds of party favors, a pinata, decorations at party express (they have both dogs and Littlest Pet Shop!). We've had a bouncy house brought to our home by Awesome bounce - may be difficult in February since you can't predict the weather.

The other things we've done is a party at Build a Bear. They do an amazing job - you don't have to do anything!! It can be from $10/child on up, it's up to you. You can build a bear, just get clothes and accessories for an animal you already have...

If you do the party at your home, you can get each girl a mini-scrapbook, scrapbooking stickers, ribbons, sparkles.. there are kits you can buy pretty inexpensivley. Take pictures of the girls at the party-as they get there, eating cake (or whatever), playing a game.. and have someone print them during the party and they can do a craft of scrapbooking a couple of pages and the cover with pictures of the party - or they could bring pics of themselves, family, pets.. with them to use to save time and ink!

Good luck! Have fun - they grow so darn fast!!! :)

I know you said you didn't want to do one of those bouncy places, but I would check out Monkey Bizness anyway. You can have up to 25 kids and you have your own private play area so it's really easy to keep track of the kids. The equipment is geared towards all ages, from toddlers to adults!! You could bring your own decorations for the room that you have cake and icecream in. It's also cheaper than other places, around $200 but that includes invitations, play time and cake and icecream time.

Another fun idea, My aunt had a mother-daughter tea party. She had finger sandwiches and tea, and bought little teaset painting kits, and for an activity, all the girls pained a tea cup and saucer, then took them home for party favors. The invitations were a little bag of cookies, with a hand made invitation tied to it. That was really fun and the girls loved it.

Age 6 we did a great indoor pool party at Englewood rec center - they have a wonderful frog slide, a walk-in shallow end for nonswimmers and a very large party room. It was not expensive and makes a nice activity for a February party!

A roller skating party is good for that age and they can accomodate a lot of kids and the price is not that bad!

The best thing for an at home birthday party is to have a schedule with a lot of acitivities..some you may not get too.

Along the dog theme of dogs..have everyone bring a stuffed dog with them. Like Build a Bear, you could have a station where the kids could get their dog washed. Have combs, either a real or pretend blowdryer, and ribbons or pieces of fabric to tie on the dog.

Games you could play are musical bones, bone hunt, (Use paper cut outs of bones, or real dogbiscuits, hide them before hand and see who finds the most. Pinata's are always fun, and you could even decorate plastic bowls with permanent marker, a "dog dish" that they could keep stuff in and use to hold their pinata candy. Just a few ideas to go along with the dog theme.
