Need Advice with Keeping My Daughter Locked in Her Booster Seat

I recently bought my 3 year old daughter a high-back booster seat (uses the seat belt only), as she outgrew her car seat (5-point harness). The problem is that in my car, she can unlock the seat belt when she gets mad or starts having a tantrum in the car. Yesterday, I had to spend the entire ride home in the back seat with her as I had to keep locking her back in, obviously not safe. If I'm by myself I have to pull over until she's done with her tantrum. I have tried talking with her about it when we are driving, and at that time she understands she cannot open it until I tell her she can, but when the tantrum starts, reasoning with her is not an option. Does anyone know of anything I can use in conjunction with the seat belt lock or have any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

My daughter will be 4 at the end of the month and she was like that, finally I asked one of our freinds that is a County Sheriff to see what I can do. When she was 2 1/2 we had to remove the 5 point harness becasue it did not fit her, but the seat belt gave her more freedom. My recomonadtion is go to your local poclice departement and see if they have some one that could talk to your child or have a fun time learning about saftey. I have heard of some towns offereing safety day at the police station and then they can help re-enforce what you have been telling her. If you go to the police station you go first to talk to them and then take her back so you are not really going to talk about her in front of them, because she will get attention then. This could be her looking for any kind of attention she can get while you are drive. Hope this helps. N.

Begging, bargaining, reasoning, and conjoling a 3 year old to do something that is NOT negotiable in terms of safety and legality is ridiculous. You have far deeper issues to deal with than just her unlocking her seatbelt. She is having a battle of wills with you, and you are losing. If it were me, I'd use a GOOD OLD FASHIONED SPAKING and tell her NEVER DO THAT AGAIN. Some things are just not up for debate.

Hi,

The only thing that I can think of is to tell her she has to put the seat belt on just like Dora, "so we can be safe" That's what we have told our daughter (who is now 3) and she understands that since she can relate to Dora.

I can't think of anything else to try at the moment. Good luck!

My son is 4 and he is in a booster seat, and at first he tried to pull the same thing, then ( his seat had the 5 point harness) WE PUT IT ON HIM AND he hated it and we told him as long as he undoing his belt he would have to wear the harness too....I know the boosters that have the 5 point harness and can convert to a seat belt harness, are made to fit kids up to age 7, so try this and see if that works for you.....sometimes it takes going blistic on the child for them to understand what has to happen and that tanturms are not accectable!!!

I saw these one time, never tried them don't know if they work but worth a try.

Hands Off Seatbelt Security Tabs Two Pack $6. When words arent working, try a gentle reminder. These small adhesive tabs affix to the seat belt release button. The patented surface texture of rounded, child-safe knobs is barely noticeable to adult fingers and yet gently discourages children from unwanted buckle pressing. Does not interfere with buckle release. Waterproof adhesive removes easily with no residue. Perfect for seat belts and car seat harness buckles

Hi Tami,
You may have to get a Britax for older kids that has a five point harness. Also there is another brand that is less expensive at Babies R Us but I don't remember the name of it. At any rate, it is very unsafe for all of you in the current situation so it is worth it to spend the extra money to protect you and your daughters.

It sounds like she is having issues maybe because of the baby in the family. Sounds like she is trying to get your attention. But I'm no expert on this - you may want to get a book that tells you how to deal with a three year old that has tantrums.

Hope it works out.

You're going to have to find a car seat that she fits in untill she is mature enough to handle sitting in a booster seat. The way the new law is written it doesn't specify when a child can move to a booster seat but keep in mind that the old stated that until age four kids had to be in a car seat. Most important though, is not age or size but keeping your daughter safe and she is not safe in a booster seat at this time!
