Hello ladies. My son is almost 8 months old and was diagnosed with his first ear infection last week. The pediatrician said it was not a bad one and we started him on an antibiotic that day. He's been on it for 6 days and he acts fine. He never really acted like anything was wrong in the first place. I had a feeling he wasn't 100%. Anyhoo, he's been eating great but today, he would hardly eat his breakfast and would not eat a bottle at all. He kept pushing it out w/ his tongue and would start crying. His doctor said it hurts for them to suck w/ an ear infection but he has been eating from a bottle everyday since then. Why would he just quit all of a sudden? Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

My little one goes through days where she isn't hungry and won't eat at all. try to get at least water or something down him at all times to prevent dhydration. They eat when they are hungry. My youngest daughter has Acid Reflux and a week after we put her on her medication she wouldn't take a bottle at all. So, I took a cool washcloth and rubbed it on her gums and gave her juices and other things like that.

After antibiotic therapy, thrush is not uncommon and would cause his mouth and thoat to be sore. If you have ever had a vaginal yeast infection, you know what I'm talking about as to what it can feel like for him to suck/swallow.
Look in his mouth 1 hour after eating to see if there is a white film and/or patches of white (usually starts on back of tongue) that cannot be changed or removed with a Q-tip or washcloth. The palate can also itch so tongue thrusting is a way for them to scratch.
Check the diaper area for redness and/or rash, this is also indicative of a thrush infection. Usually a yeast rash in the diaper area) looks like a scalding of the skin.
Or maybe he just doesn't feel like eating after being sick and/or on medication; just like older children and adults. Just offer fluids/foods frequently and wait, he'll let you know when he's ready.
If it happens to be thrush, let me know and I'll send you information on what to do.
Good Luck!.....D. B.

My 21 month old did this as well. Don't worry so much about you son eating. Try to make sure he drinks a little bit so he does not get dehydrated but from my own experience, I know that they will eat when they are hungry. Good Luck to you!

Is he constipated or gassy? My daughter would stop eating if she felt bloated at that age. You might want to feel his tummy. If it feels a little firm or the antibiotic has a side efffect of constipation I would give him a baby laxitive. If that is the problem I would expect him to go back to being hungry once he was feeling more comfortable.

It doesn't sound lie it is related. Check in his mouth for any red spots. You may need to take him back to the pediatrician for them to check to be sure he doesn't have something else going on like strep. When you are on an antibiotic, the immune system is OFF so you can get other things going on.

I would not worry about eating at this point sometimes symptoms get worse befor they get better. My boys have had several ear infections. The most important thing to worry about is that he is getting a lot of fluids. You may need to resort to sippy cups that have a free flow or fast flow or popcycles work great its fun to eat the cool helps with the ear pain and they never refuse a popcycle. You can also put a warm wet rag on the infected ear to help with the pain and tylenol or ibuprophin are also a good idea till the pain is gone. If symptoms are not better in a few days I would return to the doctor sometimes a medication change is necessary.

Hello, sorry to hear your son is having ear infections, they are not fun. Growing up I have had them all my life. Just like with a cold sometimes how it can start in your head and move down to your chest, seeming to get worse before it gets better. Ear infections can do the same. Drainage from his ears maybe causing a sore throat, or the infection has caused some uncomfortable swelling in his sinuses and ears. Keep up with fluids as much as he will take, thats the big thing, and the antibiotics of course. If it seems to get worse or he has a temp. a call to the doctor is in order. If he has been on the meds for 6 days it should pass quickly or there is something wrong. Good luck and God bless his little heart. Hang in there.

He might be teething. Run your fingers along his gums and see if there are any new bumps. If so, try to put a piece of ice in a cloth and let him suck on that. Once his gums are numb, try to feed him.

My son, who is now, 1 year had cronic ear infections for a very long time. some of the antibiotics that they gave to my son did not work so his ear infections would get worse instead of better. If youare putting cereal in his bottle he has to suck harder to get that to come out so I would try regular milk. With my son my doctor told me to give him the pediasure drinks (he loved those). Hope this helps you a bit. If he dosen't get better you may want to take him to a ear nose and throat specialist. Don't let you doctor let it get out of hand. Its your sons hearing that could be affected.

I know my son when he was that age would have days where he just didn't have an appetite. The pediatrician said it was ok, I learned through many researches of my own that a child will not starve themselves. They will eat when they are hungry. I hope this helps.

My guess is that either the medicine is upsetting his stomach, or the medicine is not working and the ear infection is getting worse.
