Need Advice on My Daughter Waking up an Hour After Going to Sleep at Night

Hello,

I need some advice on getting my 4 1/2 month old daughter to stay asleep after we put her to bed. We have a regular schedule. Firstly, I am in the process of slowing down breastfeedings and she has cereal in the a.m. Her last feeding begins around 7 p.m. (she already has her pj's on and ready for bed). She usually takes a 20 minute nap after 20 minutes of eating. I then feed her little more. I've tried bottle feeding her with 6 oz of formula to fill her up. She still wakes up. I don't think she's still hungry, but who knows. We put her in her crib around 8:15. She falls asleep 'most' of the time with no problem. We are very lucky there, BUT she wakes up at 9, I feed her little more and she falls back to sleep very quickly. She usually sleeps until 9 a.m. (wakes up every now and then at 2 a.m.). What are we doing wrong? Am I putting her down too early? I talk to other mom's and their babies go down at 7 ish and never wake up. I know she will go through phases. This started about a week 1/2 ago.

What can I do next?

Well, sounds like you have a good schedule...
I'm all about good schedules and great sleep. (hence, I have 4 kids.. all great sleepers)....

My advise... she's probably waking b/c she's over-tired.. (not hungry).... you know she can sleep through the night, she has done this already for you....
I suggest backing up her bedtime... sounds like you have friends that have probably already told you this.... when mine were that little, they went to bed at 630pm... and slept til 630-700am... sleep breads sleep... I know it doesn't make sense in our minds to back up the bedtime, but, it works!
give this a try and maybe that will help.
also, be sure sure she's getting 2 good naps during day... the better she naps in the day, the better she will sleep at night... again, the sleep breads sleep theory....

I could go on and on about this subject, I've helped many a friends on this topic, but, don't want to be too "over-board" on info...

good luck!

My daughter used to do the same thing... I would put her to bed and after half an hour to 45 minutes she would wake up. We tried everything and finally we just let her cry it out. AFter weeks and weeks of trying to hold her, comfort her, go and tell her it was ok and to go back to sleep etc etc we finally just let her cry. We use the cry it out method for sleep training and its always worked for us. I don't know what you think about it. We let our daughter cry it out for almost an hour for a day or 2 and then she would cry less and less and finally she stopped waking up or atleast didnt let us know when she was up. I knwo it sounds cruel and yes it is ahrd to hear them cry that much.. but if you do it for a couple of days and not weeks or months I don't think it can do much harm.

Good luck. I understand the frustration!
Aarti.

When she wakes up at 9 is she *really awake* (ie recognizes you, is alert) or does she cry out and you run in to comfort her and discover that her eyes are open but she doesn't really seem to be awake? I ask because if it's the latter, that sounds more like a "night terror" type waking than a real waking. If so, just stand in the doorway and make sure she doesn't hurt herself (unlikely since she's so young) and let her settle herself. If she has a lovey put it in her arms so she can find it. Our son does this on occasion - used to do it more - and it's best not to respond to it - it only serves to disturb them more.

As for the bed time, I do not think 8:15 is too early. Sounds like you're doing everything right to me. I'd just try not responding at 9 if she wakes and see if she'll go back to sleep. If she doesn't within 10 minutes, go tuck her in, give her her lovey and a kiss and leave her again. She will figure it out within a few nights.

Wow, she sleeps through the night till 9am! I envy you! :-)
I put my son down at 8pm, he wakes up around three times a night for a bottle and wakes up for good in the morning at 5:30am! He just will not sleep all night. However, when he takes a nap during the day it is always at 1ish for three hours strong! I look so forward to those naps.

You could just try puttingher down to sleep at 9pm instead and see if she sleeps through the night.

Good luck!

Wow! I would say you are doing great if she sleeps through the night after waking up at 9! Our daughter did the same thing around 4 1/2 months but she also woke up every 3 to 4 hours after that to eat as well. I let it happen since she would eat and go right back to sleep. I would say if she is actually eating and not just using you as a pacifier let her eat and go back to sleep. For us it was easier than trying to get her back to sleep without eating. My daughter is now 7 months and has relapsed back to this, but isn't as hungry any more. I think it is because she is teething so she is waking up instead of soothing herself back to sleep. Who knows.

Good Luck!
