Hello, I would like to ask those in Texas or elsewhere if anyone has bought their own dental insurance and which one might be a good deal? I need a root canal & we don't have insurance yet (have relocated from an overseas teaching job).

Thank you!!!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your responses! I was leaning towards just paying the cash price. I already have a dentist that I am very pleased with, and right now I just need the one root canal (thank God we got orthodontia done overseas, which I never dreamed we would do).

Whe we revamped our insurance a few months ago, we dropped dental and vision altogether.

Why you ask?? First of all, we all have healthy teeth, hubby and I have a couple of crowns and daughter is fortunate to need no ortho treatments.

When you buy dental coverage, the premiums are kindof high and there are restrictions. Such as...many policies will do NOTHING for 18 months, even cleaning. Some will do routine cleaning but nothing intil you have been on the policy for 18 months. THEN, if you need a root canal, crown, etc, they only pay a portion (sometimes less than 1/2).

Look at the big picture... you pay say $100 a month and cannot have any work done for at least 18 months and then you only get about 1/2 covered. SO...do the math... that is $1800 you have spent on premiums and you have to have a crown for example which is around $1500 which will NOT be covered unless you are past the 18 month period. Therefore, you have to pay the $1500, of course a deductible is somewhere in there and that is usually high.

You come out ahead to take the CASH price offered by the dentist which is usually a substaintial discount because they do not have to deal with insurance.

Just another perspective for you to consider.

i am in a different area then you but found that all dental ins that I found is not worth it unless you have to have some major work done and lots of crowns. but normal routines and cleaning and fillings here and there, it is so much cheaper to pay cash. they sometimes will give you a discount if you do as well.

We have our dental insurance through United health care..
Also some orthodontist have payment plans and low cost care for patients in need.. You may want to google it and see where they have free clinics.

We use Dr. Mark Castor.(I have been using him for almost 30 years.). Maybe you could all his office and ask his staff for suggestions..
