Need Advice on a Diaper or Washable Underwear for Bed-wetting Child

I need advice on a VERY absorbent diaper, pull-up, or washable underwear for my son who is almost 5. As a child I wet the bed until I was almost 12, so I am concerned that my son will have the same problem. So far he does not seem upset about wetting the bed, but lately his pull-ups have been leaking almost every night. I have tried pampers super absorbent diapers size 5, Pull-ups, underjams, as well as underjams with a Gerber 3T plastic absorbent potty training underwear on top. We have also tried waking him up to go to the bathroom before my husband and I go to bed and they still leak. His sister, who is not 3 yet, has been having mostly dry nights for weeks now. I want to solve the problem of wet sheets before he becomes more aware and begins to be embarrassed about it. I plan on discussing this issue with his pediatrician at his next well check, so I would just like advice on the diapers, thanks.

Goodnites night-time diapers! My son was 7 when he finally stopped wearing them, about 3 months ago. My daughter is 5 and tried stopping but isn't ready yet. Started at about age 3, when the other diapers kept leaking (they looked huge on my daughter, but worked). And boys tend to be later than girls, my son wasn't even interested in trying until about a year ago. He also just gave up sucking his thumb this year. I still need to wake my son up to go to the bathroom once, and he occasionally does still have accidents.

I know this may sound weird but I used to put Depends in my son's diaper. He was a "super-peer" and this was one of the only things that I found that worked. For some reason, Safeway stopped making their diaper doubles or at least they don't carry them at my store anymore. Hopefully this helps.

My son is 5 and is a bedwetter genetically! My brother and my husband wet the bed until they were nearly 10 years old so it was kind of expected. We use Pampers Underjams and use three diaper doublers and we generally have no issues with a wet bed. We fold two of the doublers in half and leave one long and stuff them in front. I expect to be doing this for some time. We have him go just before bed but he has no sensation of waking during the night. Give him time, its most likely his body trying to catch up.

My son is 4 1/2, and we still use Huggies Pull-Ups. They also make night time ones, but I don't notice a significant difference between them and the day time ones. The night time ones might be slightly more absorbent? Perhaps you've already tried them, though. My son doesn't really have a problem peeing through the pull-up, and actually only has accidents on occasion, but I've read other posts where people have suggested placing a pad, either a maxi pad, or the pads people with incontinence issues use, inside the pull up for more absorbency?

I also wet the bed well into my elementary school years, so I can relate on a personal level. Your son is lucky to have an understanding mom. We don't make an issue of night time accidents and I never will. I'll let my son wear pull-ups as long as he needs them. He never has accidents in the day time, so when he does at night, I know it's not behavioral whatsoever. He can't help it.

Best wishes to you and your son. I wish our parents knew what we are learning now about night time dryness and the normalcy of accidents well into childhood.

When my son kept leaking through his diaper we started added a small size gdiaper insert to his diaper and it kept him dry. We would fold it and put it in the front of his diaper. Also, Chiropractic can do wonders for some kids that have a harder time with bed wetting.

We had the same problem with our son a few years ago. We used a disposable product called "Diaper Doublers". It's like a sanitary napkin that you fold and insert in the front of the overnight diaper. It adds quite a lot of extra absorbency. Used to have trouble finding them in stores though, and had to order them on-line. Had trouble just now even finding them on-line though, so not sure they are available at all any more. Looks like there are a lot of washable ones made from hemp available now. Also saw similar disposable products designed for incontinence in the elderly.

You can look into FuziBunz as they make a larger size, Ansty pants-these might be better for your son given his age. They look like pull-ups in cool colors and you can stuff them to adjust the absorbency. I would recommend at least 2 hemp liners possibly 3. Check pinstripesandpolkadots.com they have both. I just bought the Babykicks medium hemp liners and they are great! Thin and super absorbent. If you go the cloth route feel free to message me to get the skinny on prepping your stuff.

Def talk to the doctor. Some docs will say up to age 6 is normal others age 5. They may want to test his hormone levels to see if he is producing the hormone that flips the switch to help them stay dry at night. She/he might also suggest a body alarm to help train his body.

I don't have a diaper answer - under jammies in size small work for us generally. However, my real trick is to make the bed with a water proof mattress pad and the layers of alternating sheets and water proof sheet protectors. I layer about 5 or 6 when I make the bed and it is really easy to change the bed quickly at night or in the morning. This also is good because he sleeps in the top bunk and making the bed is a real pain. It also help with storage - all the sheets are on the bed.

Have you tried a diaper doubler insert?

I would try the night time pull ups with a diaper insert for absorbency they are at babies r us( they use to be anyway) then put a rubber pant on top of that. If he wakes up a night because he is wet and you are changing sheets then use a double layer of sheets so all you have to do is peel off the top layer and go back to bed. I was a nanny for a boy who had this issue too. We put a rubber sheet over the whole mattress then a sheet then a waterproof mattress pad then another sheet.
For the boy I took care of he too came from a family with night dryness problems and it turned out to be a real medical promblem with the bladder and eruthra and growing at the same rate as the rest of his body however by time he was ten his insides caught up with his age. Good Luck to you.

I have used bed wetting protectors hospitals use on top of my son's sheets so I don't have to change the sheets if there is an accident. But they don't always stay in place if your child tosses and turns a lot during the night!

Also, here is a link to One Step Ahead and their bed wetting training underwear, have no idea if they really work and they are expensive but I thought I'd share the option. Plus, they have other potty training items that may interest you.

I dont have a suggestion on a diaper or pull up but you might want to start limiting his fluid intake after dinnertime and make sure he goes to the bathroom just before heading to bed.

We are in very similar situations, my 10 year old still wets the bed. I was 12 or 13 when I stopped and so were 2 of my brothers. It is hereditery from my side of the family. What we have been buying are the Safeway brand pull-ups we haven't had much problem with leaking, they come in bigger sizes and we get more than if we buy a National brand of pull ups.

At his 10 year old well check my doctor suggested one of those alarms that you hook up to them. We just recently started with it- they say it takes 4 to 6 months to be completely effective. He has had more dry nights than wet ones recently though.

Hi, I’m M. Francis from the GoodNites NiteLite Panel. Mamapedia is partnering with GoodNites and we get a lot of questions like yours, so I wanted to check in and see how things are going now. What did your pediatrician say at your appointment? Have you tried the new GoodNites Underwear? They're made in larger sizes for growing kids and look and feel a lot like regular underwear, and are super-absorbent so even heavier wetters wake up in a dry bed. Check out GoodNites.com for more information on bedwetting. Good luck, and let us know how things are going now!
