My daughter just turned a year old a few weeks ago. I am having a very difficult time trying to wean her from the breast. The main time is when she is sleepy. I thinlk it may be more of a comfort thing for her. Also, She is a very picky eater & drinker. I can only get her to eat bananas, goldfish, cereal puffs & carrots. She refuses to drink milk. Even Chocolate milk!! I would love some advice on all of this. Im a first time mom!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Why do you need to wean her? Why not wait until she's ready. Mine was 14 months and dropped me like a hot potato. I'm not sure what to do about the milk situation though, my kids drank theirs. Does she like it in her cereal, or maybe yogurt or cheese? And children are picky eaters because we let them, take it from me. Introduce different foods each meal, and she might try something she likes too. My daughter would eat off my plate, because she saw me eating it.Good luck:)

I had similar issues with my first daughter who turned 2 years old in March. I finally got her off at 14 months after I became pregnant with our second child. It took two tough nights to do it. She cried a good amount, but honestly I thought it'd be worse. I stood my ground and believe it or not, that was it. We co-slept with her which probably made it tougher than it would have been otherwise. Still, after the first couple of nights, she lost the desire for it and she developed an appetite I'd never imagined she'd be capable of!! It's still tough to get her to drink milk, so I substitute with cheeses and yogurts. Hope this offers you some peace of mind...

My daughter was a year when I weened her. She wouldn't take any milk unless it was from me. She NEVER took a bottle, pacifier or cup, just me. I thought it would be hard (I used to cry because I was all she would take and I wanted a break), but the advise I received helped a lot and she was weened in a week. It was vanilla flavored soy milk, but I wasn't the first person to try it with her. I was told she would reject it from me if I tried first because she knew I had what she really wanted. I wasn't even around the first time. It is worth a try.

If she is still being breastfed, of course put breastmilk in a bottle or sippy cup. I weaned off the breast at 2 1/2 months due to having to go back to work. I found it very easy using a Gerber Nuk nipple instead of the standard bottle nipple. When I used the standard nipple my daughter wasn't having anything to do with it. When I put a Nuk nipple on it, she sucked the bottle right down. I pumped and stored the milk everyday and put it in a bottle when i was ready to use it.

Could your daughter be refusing the container in which you put the milk and not the milk itself? My daughter would only drink milk from a bottle- absolutely refused to drink it from a sippy cup; and she'd drink water from a sippy cup and not from a bottle. Maybe changing the delivery method would help her. Have you tried different types of milk like 2% instead of whole? Or maybe she'd like rice milk or goats milk. When it comes to the food (and milk too) you just have to keep introducing it. All the books on the subject say it can take a child just seeing a food 10 or more times before they will even try it, let alone like it. So just keep introducing things to her. Try introducing the food first before giving her something you know she'll eat. At this point she can be eating what you make for yourself. My kids always want to eat what's on my plate so maybe seeing you sitting down to the table with her and eating with her would help. You might also try sitting her down with the food you want her to eat, and only after she's tried a few bites then bring out a little of the food she likes. Then continue this exchange. I'm also wondering if her refusal to drink milk is related to her weaning- if she doesn't drink the milk, you'll nurse her. Maybe it's just a matter of being firm about not nursing her, and giving her a bottle or sippy cup of milk when she wants to nurse and sticking to it. I know the sticking to it (especially when they start to cry) is the hardest part, but in the end it usually works out for the best. Good luck.

I don't have any advice on weaning. my son is 15months and we're still going strong. he won't drink milk either but i have breast milk to back me up. have you thought about warming the milk? that might help.
And.. i'd never really call any child a picky eater. it took a long time for my son to like certain things. just keep trying. i have read that it can take up to 20 times of trying before they like something.

good luck momma

my son is 14 mths old and I had some problems with getting him to drink milk....I started putting the drinkable yogurts in his milk and he started drinking it that way...you could also try the strawberry syrup or even butterscotch syrup thats in the icecream topping section of the grocery store. as far as the weaning process goes My son still nurses and we are just now starting to wean....I have stopped his morning one and does not even seem to notice it. I will be stopping the afternoon one in the next few days, but I believe the bed time feeding will be the hardest to stop. If you find any helpful tips let me know
