D.G. asks from Indianapolis, IN

I am at a bit of a loss here, my son is 4 and very ready for preschool. He asks almost everyday if he can go to school yet. The problem is I really want him to go to Bonnie McBeth (plainfield), they seem to have a really good curriculum and I love the way he was treated by the staff. He's on some sort of waiting list. Meanwhile I'm thinking of other places to send him except I don't want him to just go to a daycare that claims to be a preschool and he's not really learning anything. Another thing is it's only half a day and I'm just about ready to work outside the home again (I guess) so are there daycares that maybe drop off or pick up? I'm not from here so things that were available to me in Denver are not offered here I'm learning. Can anyone recommend a great school or daycare for my 14mo and 4 yr old in the Joliet/Lockport/Plainfield area?? Sorry so lengthy but I feel so out-of-sorts!! I've called around and talked to people and I've been rushed thru my questions or given vague answers. I'm wondering am I speaking a different language or something?<!*#^ I called one daycare to get an idea of the cost and she couldn't tell me how much she charges or even a range. She got angry with me when I asked after going back an forth (I swear I wasn't rude) "You don't know how much you charge for YoUr services?" Is that not a normal question? I'm rambling.....thanks for letting me vent. ;oP(Big Sigh)

What can I do next?

Hi D.,
I am so sorry that your going through all of this. I am a licensed daycare provider in the area. I would first call Childcare Resource and Referral at ###-###-####. They are a service you can call and for a fee they will give you a list of providers who are licensed and have openings in the area. You just call and let them know what area you are looking for. You could also try calling Linda Baker at ###-###-####. She is the Referral Coordinator for the Will County Childcare Assoc. They are a group of licensed providers and there are around 60 members. The group has been together for over 20 years. I wish you the best of luck and try it out. I am full for that age and so is everyone I know, so please give it a try.
good luck,
C.

My kids go to Kensington School in Naperville (75th and Book). They have other locations but I'm not sure wich one would be closer to you. They have part itme and full time program and add-ons (enrichment classes). I looked around and I found it to be the one with the best curriculum, not just a day care. My kids are in the full time program so, I can't tell how much for the part-time but i would recommed them. They do offer some kind of pick-up service but 'm not sure how it works. (When i was doing the research they were very clear on the phone and I ended up going there to talk in person.) Good luck!

D. -- Preschool in plainfield is really hard! There are too many kids and not enough schools. My sons have both gone and currently go to AppleTree preschool, but my assumption is that there's a waiting list there too. Especially for the 4 yr old classes, but you can try calling and see. I don't know where in plainfield you live, but there are some churches that have schools. There's a church right across from Heritage grove middle school.. they are newer and might have openings. There's a small lutheran preschool on 126 and Rt. 59 (on 126 JUST west of 59)that might have openings...

Another place that people like is Plainfield Jr. Village. They have daycare as well as just preschool... I know kids who go to the preschool, but not the daycare. But they don't take kids even in the daycare till they are 2.9 and potty trained. So it wouldn't work out for your younger child, but that's always something to consider.

Some in home daycares do preschool type curriculums.. Chesterbrook is a great place (though pricey). They are HIGHLY academic and they do Full day K if that's something you are needing as well.

Email if you need more recommendations, info etc.

I have heard great things about Bonnie McBeth and bad things.. it seems to be something people love or don't.. and I don't have enough experience with that to give a good recommendation or not. But again, that's half day and you have to provide transporation.

Hi D.,
I've just concluded a similar search and agree with Simone. I put my son Joshua in the full day preschool program in Kensington as well. He started last Tuesday and seems to really like it. Your 4-year-old will thrive there. HOwever, they don't have anything for 14-month olds yet.
HOpe this helps!

We have been sending our daughter to Garden Gate Montessori on Theodore, off of Rt 59, for the past three years. She is currently in full day kindergarten. They accept children 3-6 yrs old. I am not sure if they have any openings, but it is a great school. Usually enrollment begins in Feb for the next school year so it might be tough to find a place. Good luck!
