Need Adult Rehab or Halfway House...

Does anyone have experience with, or advice about, any kind of rehab or halfway house for adults... not necessarily with an addiction or criminal background, but just to help someone get back on track, or back on their feet a little bit?

I am aware of Cenikor and plan to contact them, but (other than strictly mental or addiction "institutes,") I wonder if there are other similar facilities or programs I could contact in the Fort Worth area?

I have a close relative who just cannot seem to get back on her feet (or stay there for very long), and I've been told she'll be moving back to Texas probably within the next few weeks. She'll be contacting me for help, and probably a place to stay, and I'm just wringing my hands. She just turned 50, and letting her live with me, even after she finds some kind of job, is just not an option at this point. I'd like to find a place (like Cenikor) that would take her in, help her get her head together a little bit (she's naturally distraught over her situation, as you might imagine), and possibly teach her some useful skill or trade before sending her out into the real world again.

Alternatively, if anyone knows of a job opportunity that doesn't require a lot of experience or particular technical skills, she will need a job immediately when she arrives. She's very artistic (worked in a graphic print shop for several years and loved that), has some college (very articulate), is very personable, and wants to work and do a good job.

Anyway, any advice or ideas you may have will be appreciated.

What can I do next?

The only thing I can think of right now is the YWCA downtown. They allow women to live there and provide social services for them. They are in the phone book. You could also contact The Women's Center, which offers a Job search service and also they have a Helpline, and can offer information and referral for just about anything. The Women's Center is not a shelter. Their number is ###-###-####, I think. I used to be an intern there. Good luck!

YWCA. Their housing is located in downtown Ft Worth. I think it is at 4th and Taylor. The ladies who work for the Y are their during office hours, as well as a lady that is there overnight. I've know many without addictions or criminal background who have gotten help there as well as those who do have those backgrounds. It is a great program!

The Community Enrichment Center (CEC) works with families on things like a place to live, finding and applying for jobs, and basically getting things together. They have a food pantry and other services too. You might want to check them out at www.thecec.org -- I have worked with them by adopting families, and they seem like a very "together" organization, Christian too.

Hi D.! First of all, i applaude you for being a caring family member.
I work at MHMR of Tarrant county. We have rehabs and clinics all over the metroplex. We also offer case management, percription management, sessions with a psycologist, etc. Most of our services are based on residence, diagnosis, and income. If you have no income, you dont have to pay! Please check out the website www.mhmrtc.org or call our I-CARE hotline and speak to a Screening Interventionist. Good luck and feel free to message me if you have any questions. I determine if a person is eligible for our services for mental health so hopefully if I dont know the answer, I'll find it from someone else.

I am not sure if this place could help or not but....Union Gospel Mission has a resident area for women who are trying to get back on their feet. I am not sure what the rules are for getting in there, but by calling them maybe they could guide you in the right direction.

I actually know a lady who is apart of Centicor. I can give you her email. She is great! She may be able to help your friend. ____@____.com - Deb Russell. She is a good friend of mine and her mission in life is for people like your friend. I would also suggest Celebrate Recovery. This is a free "12 step program" for people who have hurts, habits and hangups. The only one I can personally speak for is the group that meets at Harvest Church in Watagua/North Fort Worth. This is an excellent group. I coordinated the childcare for 2 years for this CR group. Dr. Ray Hicks leads the group. He is a physcologist. He is very good. This group is really amazing. I've watched them and they are a very tight group. They are very accepting of new people. They do not judge, because they all have their problems. The number to Harvest is ###-###-####. I suggest calling the church if you would like more information. Or, just show up on a Monday night. They serve a light dinner at 6pm and then they meet afterwards. It's worth going.

Blessings,

Pathways (www.gopathways.org) is excellent for what you're describing. It is a life-management program designed to help folks like your relative "who cannot seem to get back on her feet." Check it out on the web. It's based in Dallas. Although it is not "in-house," it is a 4-month long program where participants learn to live from the heart, deal with the past hurts, and, eventually, even make their own "life plans." Particiants check into a hotel for each segment of the program A same-gender roommate from the same class is assingned to hold down the costs. I recommend this even if your relative ends up living with you or not.

The 1st session, called "the Weekend," meets for Friday evening, Saturday (all day), and ends on Sunday.

The 2nd session called, "The WALK," is an intensive, Wed-Sun. There are usually 10 days between "the Weekend" and "the WALK.

The 3rd session called, "P-1" gives tools for dealing with life-issues. This meets the next month for one weekend, Friday-Sunday.

The 4th session called "P-2" gives even more tools dealing with life-issues. This also meets the next month for one weekend Friday-Sunday.

The 5th session called, "P-3" the next month's weekend session is much like icing on the cake, where graduation follows and graduates (who now have life-plans) stand up before the audience and proclaim in descriptive terms who they are!

The YWCA has a great program for women. It is called the Supportive Living Program. It is a seventh month program with the sole purpose of helping women become self-sufficient. Not only housing (downtown Fort Worth at 3rd/4th Street and Burnett), but also all the supportive services to help her "get on her feet". She simply has to call them ###-###-#### to get an interview with the case manager. It does take a few days to get in and sometimes there is a waiting list. It is not an emergency shelter, but it is a WONDERFUL program with wonderful results. They do require women to work, refrain from drugs (they do testing) and work towards independence.

Good luck to you both!

Contact Tarrant County MHMR for help -- she seems to have some anxiety-related problems. They may have openings in a 'group home' setting that might work for her.
