Ok here i gooo!!! i have a six year old son that was born premature at 24weeks! it was a huge roller coaster ride.he had intestinal surgery eye and many blood trasfusions he was a very sick baby, he is now six and in kinder he is in the special kinder classroom because of his delayed speech and he also gets ot.. on the first day of school i was so happy for him and i could tell he was happy also to start kinder.when we walked into his classroom i noticed older kids and thats when i realized what i was in for!! k-6 all in one class i was a confused and upset i cant even put it in words. when i asked if he could be moved to a diffrent school with peers his own age i was told that because of the district that we live in that school was our only choice????? also my son was put in this class for speech and ot now things are only getting worse for the past couple of years i have noticed small behaviors they started off as small little behaviors and as he got older so did his behaviors and meltdowns, i have gone to the pediatrition many times he is a good pediatrition and has been helping me and my son get the resources we need but even then im lost! we got refferd to a county mental heath clinic for young kids and the doc there diagnosed him with adhd and started him on meds he also started him on sleeping med because my son is awke in the wee hours of the night just whispering to himself or laughing out so loud. he has moments that he is fine and out the blues he will bang his head on any hard surfface he can find it almost seems like it doesnt hurt him i feel horrible having to see him do this he also has sencory issues so i have a chewy key he uses otherwise he will bite me or brother,at the times of his meltdowns he shuttsdown compleatly verbaly he wont talk he will not listen to anything i would try to get accross to him. i have a gut feeling he has something else going on other than adhd? i have called the docs and tryed to explain what i feel and think and im just not getting to far.i would love for him to have a neuro physco evaluation done and the doc that said he has adhd told me he didnt think we would find anything more than what he found! i have a behavior therapyst come to my home 3x a week thats how bad my sons behavior problems have gotten sooo with all this said any mamas have any ideas on how i should go abouts getting a physco eval done is it something that needs to be mentioned in the iep??? thanks soooo much !!!!

Many times on this site I've seen people mention getting a child thoroughly evaluated by a developmental pediatrician. Hopefully, a different Dr. or the school Jennifer mentioned will give you better answers. It sounds like you aren't being heard.

Have you looked at the Shelton School website in Dallas? They are a school for kids with Learning Differences (anything from Dyslexia, ADD, Aspergers, Autism). They have an evaluation center there that does full evaluations. They take a full day. I am just starting the process for my son to have an evaluation. You don't have to be enrolled at the school to have an evaluation.

Good luck to you and your son. Keep pushing for what you think he needs. You know him better than anyone!

I agree with the Jennifer D. Keep pushing. You are the advocate for your child and you know what's best. Are you involved in any local support groups. If not they may be able to point you in the right direction in regards to your rights. Next get people on your side. Could he be in typical classroom and be pulled out for speech instead of being in a special ed class all day? We are about to have our evaluation for special ed preschool (we have been in early intervention, but we are aging out).

Check out the website rdiconnect.com. They have a lot of support and tools available for kids that approach things differently.

Also, as far as school goes, you are your child's best advocate and check with anyplace you can think of about getting him switched to a classroom *you* think fits him better. Schools now a days are much more open with enrollment.

Trust you gut here. What you are describing to me is not ADHD. I also agree with Jennifer D. Also a developmental Ped. is also a good recommendation but as far as that goes I can only tell you that we have not a had a good exp with Dr. Mike Rios. I love our Neuro physc in Denton. We see Dr. Michelle Emick.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the school district is only going to meet the minimum of what your son need. Not necessarily because that is what they want to do but because they simply don't have the resources. We go to Pediatric Therapy and Activity Center in Corinth for both Speech and OT and I LOVE them. Yes push for your son with his IEP but I would also seek outside help. My daughter has Cerebral Palsy and the school district says that she doesn't qualify for services. As much as that makes me angry I am so glad that I have gone the route we did we get such better treatment. What you are going through is hard. I wish that there were better resources for those of us who have children with special needs. Our journey with our children is very often isolating. I wish you all the best!

Look up the child study center in fort worth. They will do a full evaluation of your son to see what might be going on and have the proper resources to send you to. You don't need a referral, just fill out application.

God bless you and your son. My son was 8 wks premature but passed away at 17 days old. I would ask the pediatrician again for the evaluation. If the behavioral therapist and school are in agreement too then I see no reason why you would not get the referral. If not go to another pediatrician. re: his class room, could you tell the school you want him mainstreamed (if that is what you want) and to have a full time aid to work with him in the regular ed classroom. This is what many kids have in PA. Good Luck! Your son is very lucky to have you as his advocate.

Since you have a good relationship with your son's pedi, I would go to him. Can he refer you to a children's hospital in the area that can do the tests you and the pedi think need to be done? Keep pushing for answers and more tests until you feel satisfied with the answers you get. Good luck to you!

My daughter is in a self-contained class and they only have 1st and 2nd graders. Have you thought of checking with another school district? He could be learning behaviors from the older kids.

WOW, sounds like your little guy has a austism spectrum disorder. I am not familiar with the way things work in California, but that is not the way it works in Texas. He should be in a classroom with his peers and pulled out for his therapy sessions. Good luck and many prayers.
