Need a New Vet - Plano,TX

I have an obsessive cocker spaniel with what we think is allergies. He scratches himself to the point of sores and now has one that we cannot get to heal on his chin. He is in a collar to keep from scratching it but now has figured out how to rub it against the collar or the carpet. We have tried dozens of ointments. Our current vet just gives us a cream to treat the sore but not he problem. Any advice or referral to a vet would be great. On the up side, vinegar and water has cured the recurrent ear infection problem!

What can I do next?

I had a cocker with allergies. You can give them generic benadryl and hide the pill in a treat, which was recommended by our vet in Tucson. About a week of that helped my cocker's allergies clear considerably (enough to make the sores mostly heal), although they didn't go away completely. You can probably research giving dogs antihistamines on the internet. Try to remove likely allergens from the home, vaccuum frequently but put the dog somewhere else while you do it, etc.

I recommend Dr. Ted Staph at High Point Animal Clinic Spring Creek/Alma in Plano. ###-###-####. We have used him since we moved here in 1989. He has a great staff, most of whom have been with him since we started seeing him. He is great!

We have cockers. 4 total, 2 have passed and 2 are with us now. We have not had major allergy issues but I am always needing the ear stuff. Please tell me the vinegar/water mix for the ears. My American Cocker has the worst ear issues. My English cocker is not nearly as bad with ear problems. We also have a mini poodle who thinks he is a great dane!!

Hi A.,
Has anyone done any skin scrapes on your dog? Could be caused by mites, mange or a fungus. It's good to treat the itching but you need to find the source to treat it properly.
Could be just allergies though most will chew on their feet when this happens. I'm sure you've been told but have you treated for fleas? If not use some Advantage monthly. Some dogs are very sensitive to flea bites and can become miserable with them.
If allergies is your problem you can use Benadryl 25mg twice a day for a week or so till things clear up. But again, if the source isn't found (certain foods, inhalants or topical irritants) the problem will just return.
Also I would suggest that you use bowls that are made from glass or steel instead of plastic if sores are on the bottom chin area.
As far as vets, I would suggest Dr. Polly Dixon at Highland Park Animal Clinic. I was a vet tech for about 11 years and she was one that I worked with that really cares about the health and welfare of animals.

We use Dr. Taylor at Rockwall County Veterinary Clinic. We absolutely love him. We have bulldogs (who are known for their allergies) and he always keeps trying until we find what works best for that particular dog.
