We were originally going to Portland in the summer, but its WAY too exspensive. Anyone have a more budget wise, family vaca idea? Perfer no flying.

Hi,

Well I had friends who just got back from the waterpark in Sandusky, Kalahari www.kalahariresort.com which they said was fantastic not only for the older kids but the area for baby's or your 19 month old is the best she's ever seen. We've gone to Traverse City to Great Wolf Lodge, and while the waterpark was nice and the area in the room for the kids if you get a themed room was neat, the bed for the adults was not good at all. The food at GWL also was yucky! The only draw back I could see for Kalahari would be they allow day passes where Great Wolf Lodge does not, you have to be staying there.
What about a road trip (I know gas is expensive)to Chicago during Taste Fest! I've done that many times and it is SO FUN! Lots to do and see in Grant Park, along Lake Michigan, free concerts and tons of food. Plus they have things going on for the kids. But if your going to go, reserve a room ASAP, they fill up FAST and you want to be able to walk to the park. Try getting into a hotel that has free breakfast to cut down on costs.
Good Luck and have a great Vacation!!

Have you considered a beach house in Michigan? We are renting a house in Saugatuck for a week in August. It is just under $2000 for a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath house, with a full sized screened in porch, more tvs than we need, a pool, a lake and close to lack michigan. Oh, and it also has the ever important washer and dryer. Besides the gas to get there (about 4 hours west) and the rental fee, we plan to cook and eat in to help reduce costs. I have a 4 year old boy and 6 mos old girl. The area is very family friendly.

Good luck!

There is a water park in Marshall (I think) that just opened last year. Or, you can try camping at Kensington or Stony Creek. It's affordable and a change of scenery for the kids. You can also try Put-in Bay in Ohio.

Any place in Northern Michigan or on Lake Michigan is wonderful! We've often gone to the Interlochen State Park. Good, modern bathroom facilities, great lake, can ride bikese and walk everywhere. Plus your only 10 minutes from Traverse City if you want to go shopping, get groceries, see the bay, have a nice dinner. http://www.michigan.org/property/Detail.aspx?p=G4927

Also, someone mentioned Kalahari Resort in Sandusky. I actually went there for a work retreat and we all had a lot of fun. Know that some of the things like video games and holding the animal(s) costs extra.
