I am looking for a breast pump that is great but does not cost too much. I have a 1 month old who was born at 35 weeks. I went to a lactation consultant last week and I tried breast feeding but Sofia ended up losing weight. Her pediatrician suggested that I continue pumping but the pump I have is 5 years old and does not get alot out. I would like a Medela but the cost so much and I was recently laid off.
Try going to WIC(the organization that gives you free milk, ceral, cheese, eggs ect;) , they will give you A FREE VERY EXPENSIVE BREAST PUMP. They gave me a one for free, it was called madila? or something. They encourage breast feeding. I remember when i went to baby's R Us, and it was abour 300.00 dollars. and they gave it to me for free. I was truly blessed.
You can rent the nice Medela ones at the hospital. I rented mine from The Pill Box at memorial west hospital.
Laura is right, go see Faith Ploude at Mercy Hospital's lactation services. She has an exccellent support group system for breastfeeding mothers based on the age of the baby. The best thing to do is start by making an appointment for a private consultation. During that meeting she will even look at the shape of your breast and nipple to help guide you to the best pump for YOU. I had great success with the Avent Isis Manual Pump which retails for less tahn $50. The catch is that in order to use it successfullt I removed the cushioning part upon's Faith recommendation. Medela is really worth the money. It made a huge difference for me in terms of the amount of milk I was able to pump for my baby. It might be worth checking Goodwill or another source for a used one (the pump mechanism) and then purchasing the replacement tubes & cups from Medela as they sell a kit.

Consider renting a hospital grade pump for a few months. It is much cheaper. If your hospital doesn't do pump rentals, then there are lots of companies onlne. Here is one: http://www.lactationconnection.com/breast_pump_rentals.aspx.
Five month rental is only $175 or $35/ month. Much cheaper than formuala would be.
