My soon to be 6 yr old wants anything remote control. :)
He's also very interested in magnets right now. There are some really neat magnet sets out there that can be very educational.
What gift can I get for a 6 yr old. He's in a playgroup I just joined so I don't know him well.
He is very active, into sports & has a lot already but I want to get him something affordable.
I don't want to get him a gift card.
Any ideas?
TIA

If he's into sports? I would say a soccer net and ball? They are usually less than $25 at Target. Easy to set up.
One year we bought our neighbor boy a La Crosse set - as it was a sport he wanted to try....it was the beginner set - so it was easy for him to use!
My budget for Bday presents is usually $20 and for a child I don't know I usually give a Playmobil or Lego set for that age.
I also attach a gift receipt to the back of the birthday card (just tape it to the back of the card) and let the mom know it's there... just in case the gift ends up being a duplicate.
Good luck.
Board Games are great at this age, think Trouble, Sorry or even Battleship.
Wiffle ball and bat.
Velcro dart board (comes with little balls not darts).
Desktop ping pong set.
Legos for sure. My son is six and he and his friends all ask for tons of legos for their birthdays. Ninjago and Chima are very popular lines of Legos right now, so I think either of them would be a great choice. My son really likes the Chima "Speedorz." Get a gift receipt and you're good to go. Legos are usually cheaper at Target than Toys R Us.
A small Lego kit is a good go-to.
As the owner of my very own nearly six year old boy, here are the favorites at my house:
- Imaginext anything
- Mighty World anything
- Legos
Since he is into sports, maybe tickets to a local sporting event?? Not sure about your area, but minor league (or even college) games tend to be very reasonable- hockey is great at the moment, basketball, arena football, something like that. You could probably get a kid ticket and an adult ticket. for $20 total.
I just finished my son's 7th b-day. Here is what 'I' liked and didn't like (my child said everything was awesome). I LOVED the magnet set. It is so easy for him to create anything (also tile magnets are great too). These are a step above legos in my book. I did tell people lego when they asked, because it seemed easy and available at most stores unlike the magnet tiles. I love gift receipts. If there are 3 gift that were not his style (he got Thomas the train item from someone and that was one thing he said if anyone saw this they would make fun of me in addition to him not liking it). I am annoyed with the remote control items. They happen to be super cheap (i am guilty of giving them as a gift because they look cool). The reason is $$ in batteries that are not included and they run out super fast. The remote take 4 AAA and the car takes 4 C batteries.
Here is my late advice for someone you do not know well, so hopefully it will help another person:
YES:
1. Magnet set (Geomag)
2. Lego
3. Board games
4. Gift receipt
NO:
Remote control anything (if you know this kid and you plan to purchase batteries then go for it). I end up taking it to the consignment store as a new item. Also, two people obviously re-gifted their kids' remote control items to my son at the b-day party.
How about a cool sipper water bottle? My kids always seem to be losing theirs at their games. Maybe he'd like a new one?
