Need a 2Nd Mammogram Due to "Density" ...lil Worried!

Hi moms...I just want some reassurance...talk me off the ledge here! LOL! Today is my 40th birthday, and like a good girl, I had a mammogram (it was not the first time.) The clinic just called to tell me they found density on the left side and the radiologist wants me to come back to make sure it's nothing. She told me (about 5 times) that this is VERY COMMON.

My great grandma died from breast cancer and my mom has 2 aunts on her dad's side that have both had breast cancer...it has not affected my Nana (who passed away from different cancer in Oct.) my mom or sisters or any of my aunts. But I am a little scared. I'm trying to be "brave" and don't want to talk about it w/ my husband and have him worrying or my mom and have her worry, but part of me does want to call my mom and see if this has ever happened to her!

Has this happened to anyone else? I will take any reassurances! (I should also mention that my best friend, who is younger than me, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer for the 3rd time!) Thanks in advance, Mamas!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am breathing easier already...thank you mamas! And as one of you mentioned, I AM pms-ing right now. I do have coffee every day, but did cut down (had none the last 3 days.) So, maybe for the next week, I will have none!!!! Thanks for the info and encouragement! It's just what I needed!

First... You have had a lot going on that can make you worry to the n'th degree.

Try to calm down. I have dense tissue and I've even opted for the sonogram just to ease my mind. I don't have cancer in my family but you never know.

Hang in there, take a deep breath, keep us informed so we can support you!

Best wishes.

Welcome to the club! I go once a year for my "yearly" and make an appointment when the Dr. available so they can do another mammo or sono (depends who the Dr.. is) right then and there. Then becuase of my dense tissue, I get to do it all again in 6 months.

Don't borrow trouble - worrying won't help (I know easier said than done).

I will say a prayer for you to handle this with grace and confidence!
God Bless!

Same thing happened to me...just last week! I'm 9 weeks pregnant and during my monthly check up the doctor felt a sonogram of the breast was needed due to "density". You can imagine how much fun receiving that news was with my pregnancy hormones raging. I was a basket case for 24 hours but all turned out perfectly fine. Radiologist said that screening due to density is very common and rarely an issue.

Hi,

I'm 36 and just had my first mammogram done 2 months ago because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at that time. I too had to go back because of the density issue - it is very common because the radiologists do not have any prior films/data of yours to compare to. So if they see anything, they will have you come back. The density issue in this age group is very common and you will probably end up being told that it is just a lymph node.

Good luck.

I had to have mine redone a 2nd time for density when my daughter was an infant. At a routine annual exam, the doc felt some lumpier than normal areas that they wanted to double check. The mammo was unreadable due to density and I had to have a 2nd one. THAT was scary to me. But it was fine.

I'm 36 and yes it happened to me 4 years ago. They even did two biopsies, on different sites but everything turned out ok. 40 is really young, I'm sure they just want to rule out anything so you can have peace of mind.
I know it's hard but really, I'm sure it will turn out ok,
have a great day!

Yep, happened to me with my first mammo. I had mine first one last Sept? and the second one in Oct? I'm a C cup, and my OBGYN said it's very common. They just can't flatten them as much as they need to in order to see everything. When I went back the gal had notes on what needed to be see, so she was putting me into some very awkward positions. Then she checked with the doctor to make sure she got what was needed before she let me go.

All is well.

Chin up, missy. Density is very common and just means that they have to look more closely and you have to be more vigilant. There is absolutely NO NEED to worry at this point. It's just like you are going for the first screening with the appropriate machine. Forget that you even had this last one because it doesn't count. Imagine that they just used the wrong pair of glasses to see you. My breasts have always been very dense, so I know what you're dealing with, minus the predisposition, of course.

Also, you might already know this, but caffeine adds to this density, so it might help to cut that out.

It is VERY common and a huge cause of stress for lots of women! I've had to go back, because of a lump, that ended up being a cyst. The second time you go in, they actually talk you through it and go over the results immediately - that was my experience. So hopefully you'll be reassured at your appt. I'd make it asap...I hate waiting for things.

I get this too. Just dense breast tissue almost every month when I pms. I was terrified to get the mammogram but they just did an ultrasound and it was just that. Dense tissue. No biggie. Take a big deep breath and get off of the internet! Lol.
