Need 13 Month Old to Gain Weight

My 13 month old has lost some weight due to being ill these last few weeks. His doctor suggested toddler formula but he won't drink it. He has always been in the 25-50% but he needs to gain weight! He breastfeeds or has a whole milk bottle 3 times/day ( and usually nurses once during the night) and 3 meals with 2 snacks. I try and give him healthy fat foods such as avocado, etc. Anyone find anything that worked for their toddler this age? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I should add that I have always made his food and even now I steam fruits and veggies and he eats what we eat.

Sounds to me like your ped is a proud supporter of formula. My baby is 10 months old, breastfeeds, eats what I eat yet she is only 16 lbs 2 oz. My concern for her low weight was reassured by my ped, who is a proud supporter of breast feeding, told me not to worry. My baby is happy, healthy, and eats when she's hungry. You cannot force-feed a child. They will eat when they are hungry so as long as you are offering nutritious foods, then I wouldn't worry. And it's normal for babies to lose their appetite, and yes, lose weight as a result when they are sick. I don't know about you, but I don't eat much when I'm sick either.

Doctors always try to go for the quick fix on getting children to regain weight after being sick. Your son doesn't need formula; in fact breast feeding is probably better as he's recovering. Just continue to feed his as usual. Maybe add some cheese or good quality protein to his diet. He'll get back to his usual weight.

My kids were always in the 5%-25% in height/weight and my doctor use to go on and on about them needing to put on pounds. They were healthy, active, and hit all the milestones so I didn't see a need for the lectures. I'm short and small, hubby is too so not like we were breeding giants.

He'll probably start gaining weight naturally as his appetite returns. I think you're giving him plenty of opportunities to eat healthy foods. If he's lost a ton of weight then I'd be more worried but it doesn't sound like that. Give him time and he'll get back to his normal weight. I think you're doing everything you should be doing. Your doctor should be reassuring you that this is normal and not freaking you out that you need to pack the pounds on him somehow.

You could add milk to soups, like homemade cream soups.

Add cheese to his scrambled eggs.

Add cheese to his veggies.

Cream to his oatmeal.

Just enrich his food for a while and see if it helps.

Sounds to me like you are doing everything right. And, the food with the highest density of calories that he can have right now is breastmilk so maybe try to add in another nursing session.
