Hi Moms,

This may get sort of long. I am asking for help before I go to the doctor so I can figure out what exactly I should ask him. About 5 to 6 years ago I did have two car accidents my cars were totaled, nothing major in the way of injuries. (So I thought) I went to the hospital got a clean bill and left. I didn't have any symptoms right after the accident. About 2 to 3 years later I started experiencing a stiff neck quite. Which became more frequent and severe. I usually get the symptoms of not being able to move my neck from side to side. Lately I have not been able to bend my head back and forth, stand up straight, or find a comfortable sleep position, without terrible pain. It feels like it is behind my neck bone or spine. It feels like something is out of place or pinching.

Have any of you felt like this? Have any of you ever experienced pain from accidents that long after? What advise can you give me?

Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Hi Ladies, Thanks for all your advise! Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I went to the chiroprator and I have been going once a month. I feel great and when I miss a month, I can feel pain again(not as bad). All the doctors have chalked it up to being a pinched nerve from my accidents.

The same type of thing happened to me about 6 years after a serious accident. I went to several chiropractors until I found a good one that worked miricals, I still go occasionaly and it's been 37 years since the accident, It could be whiplash that is now rearing it's ugly head. I am much better now. All of this happened right after the birth of my second child a 10 and a half pounder. Maybe the straining to deliver?

I have suffered from neck pain/migraines/headaches for years. Sometimes, when it's bad, I will wake up in the middle of the night with sharp pains. I do not go to my regular family doctor, though. I go to my chiropractor regularly about every 3-6 months. He is not only a regular chiropractor, but a sports medicine specialist. Five minutes in his office and I'm done! Sometimes I have to lay on his "stretcher" table (I lay on my back, knees up, and weights at my head will pull my spine/neck into alignment). This takes about 10 minutes. But boy do I feel better! I use ice (not heat) to help lower the inflammation in my neck. And I don't do much of anything after my appointment for about 2-3 days. I hope this helps!

KC,
My best advice for you is to see a chiropractor. What you are describing are severe muscle spasms resulting from sever acceleration/deceleration trauma. The sudden stopping most likely caused this muscle trauma and without proper care after the accidents the muscles been allowed to spasm causing the stiffening of the neck. There may also be underlining structural problems with the alignment of your neck and back. This misalignment can also cause muscle spasms because the bones are not in the proper position and causing the muscles to spasm. I am a chiropractor in Eastpointe, MI and this is a fairly common occurrence after a car accident, even a fairly small one. Taking pain pills or muscle relaxers will only mask the symptoms but will not address the cause of the problem, the misalignment or subluxation of the bones. I work at Khalil Family Chiropractic if you have any other questions. Our website is www.khalilchiropractic.com and our office number is ###-###-####. If my office is out of the way, please seek out a chiropractor in your area.
Yours in Health and Wellness

Injuries like yours leave "scars" in our muscles that need to be cared for. While I'm not a dr., and am not diagnosing etc etc...
I would suggest a combination of Chiropractic and massage. or whichever you are most comfortable with. You might try massage first, in my opinion as, it is the muscles that really get a great deal of stress in a situation like a car accident.
I work in holistic health world and can give you referrals to good people in your area. Let me know

Yes, the pain from my car accident did show up quite a while after the actual accident. I found relief with a good chiropractor. If you choose to go to a chiropractor, I would pick one who actually takes X-rays and doesn't just start jerking on you. There are also some very gentle ones out there.

I had whiplash like this from a car accident too...and with stress on top of it. Dr.s gave me muscle relaxer and pain killer, but the combo made me incoherent and useless. Ended up having someone refer me to a massage therapist. HOLY COW!!!!! 2 one hour sessions, and I was back to my old self. I was very skeptical, but I am all about the massage now. just make sure you go to a certified massage therapist (cmt). Good luck! And a note, if you go to a chiropractor ( I never Have), but just remember that you need to see a cmt afterwards, because if they put your bones back in place, and you don't take care to do the same with the muscles, the muscles will pull the bones back to where they were.

Be careful. A stiff neck could be a symptom of meningitis. You should definitely visit your doc. Good luck and I hope you're feeling better soon. :)

Hi KC ~
You can put moist heat on your neck...you can get those rice-filled things you warm in the microwave...they work great. You can also go see a chiropractor. It sounds like your neck is out of alignement. It takes a few visits to get it straightened out, and then monthly visits (or longer if you're doing well), will help to keep you aligned.

The chiropractor that I see is in Southgate. His name is Dr. Russell, and his number is ###-###-####. Sometimes insurance covers visits, but if not, he will work with you and it's not too expensive.

Hope you feel better!

I have terrible neck pain and lower back pain, but no car accidents or injury to cause the pain. I actually started going to a chiropractor and it's amazing how much better I feel. I would really recommend seeing a chiropractor.

I see you are trying to lose weight also. If you are interested, I was part of a weight loss challenge and lost 30 pounds. There is a $29 fee and the fees are returned to the biggest losers. At the weekly meeting you gain nutritional information after weighing in. It worked great for me....if you are interested, let me know I might be able to find one in your local area.

Good Luck and hope you have a healthy new year.

You need a good chiropractor! Bottom line.

They deal with whiplash all the time and you sound like you're experiencing the effects of not addressing it properly when you should've.

I think it'll be well worth it.

Hi K C, I had an accident, thrown off a horse - lit on tail bone, rocked back and cracked my head so hard it raised a bump the size of a golf ball. Iniatially my back, my butt gave me the pain. Neck not a problem till almost 8 years later. My kinesiologist Chiropractor said we get arthritus in damaged bone areas later - loss of cartilege, bone spurs, etc. My neck was stiff and spasmned for 3 months, could not sit, lay without pain, extreme stiffness.

Dr McKenzie was a blessing and did not manipulate my neck as this could make it worse. She did accupressure treatments which helped and gradually the pain went away. That was 17 years ago and no more pain, neck still a little lacking mobility. I started taking Gloucosamine Chondroitin with MSM (bone doctor recommends this too) supplement all this time - cheap, no side effects and this can actually help build new cartilege.

I have been a health nut, using natural alternatives to healing for over 28 years. Don't like drugs as almost everything has detrimental side effects. Best to learn how your body works and you are your best doctor. I use Doctors when I need them - but now 74 years old with normal blood pressure, stats and take NO MEDICATIONS. Still ski, sail, swim, golf and bike which helps keep the weight in control.

Happy New Year, and let me know how it goes ____@____.com Gladys Yonker

I was in a car accident 14 years ago. It was simular to your situation...the car was totaled but I was fine. Just a few bumps. Nothing major. I now have arthritis in my hip that hit the console between the front seats. I was only 22 when the accident occured and have had problems with that hip for about 11 years. My doctor told me that arthritis is a very common thing in joints that have had trama. Normally I can get through the pain but when it really flairs up I take Tylenol and it helps. Arthritis does show on x-rays, so if they do one you'll know right away if that is the problem. I hope it's nothing to major for you! Good luck!

KC,

Yes, I go through that every year or so for unknown reasons. I was recently experiencing that severe neck pain this summer. I changed doctors because after going through this 4-5 years ago (I couldn't even raise my arms at that time!), those doctors wouldn't do anything but give me medicine with no diagnosis, no test or anything. I finally just had it! I'm not the type to take medicine, let alone pain medicine so the fact that I was compelled to take anything was major for me. My new doctor immediately saw my pain and I was given a Cat Scan, and an MRI.

It's suspected that I have a pinched nerve and a disc out of place. It's also thought that it may be stress related. So far so good with no more pain, I was even put in physical therapy which also helped me tremendously. I work at the computer, so that was a contributing factor. I do neck exercises every few days (I forget every day). So don't let your doctor just blow you off with medicine and no answers because that's just to shut you up. Insist that they dig and find out what is going on.

I hope this helped you in some way.

Take care,

A

Sounds like wiplash to me. I would suggest a chiropractor not a dr. A chiropractor can take pain away with visits and not put you on tons of druggs to ease the pain. A chiropractor will cure the pain for the rest of your life unlike a dr. who will dose you in drugs tell you about surgeries and have you never feel the same. There is many bones nerves and muscles in the body. I am a massage therapist. I do not like to diagnose but I feel you probably jarred something in the accidents and you could have just picked one of your kids up the wrong way and all this happened or you could have even picked up a pencil or pen. I would go see a chiropractor Merry Christmas!!!!

My husband had a car accident years ago and the neck stuff didn't show up for 7 years. He also got a clean bill of health after all the x-rays etc, at the time. He went to a chiropractor once or twice a week for years...it finally all got back in line. It was a long road, but all is well now. Good Luck!
