Good Morning All-

The recruiter contacted my daughter yesterday to ask her to consider taking the test to become a linguist. Per their conversation, this position is needed right now and because of her high ASVAB score, they're encouraging her to take the test. I have researched on the web some and have a friend in the USAF who does career direction. Just wondered if anyone had an opinion or experience with this position?

She chose Master at Arms when she went to MEPS. She has talked about a career in law enforcement and would eventually like to land in the FBI. I know a command of several languages is helpful in the FBI.

Thoughts? Thanks for any input. I am not planning on talking to the recruiter but trying to coach her on what questions to ask. She has decided to take the test and depending on how she scores, she will then have to decide between MA or Linguist.

What can I do next?

If her ASVAB scores were high? She's going to be contacted by several branches of the military, most likely.

She needs to ask what her MOS will be and if they are sending to her to DLS - Defense Language School in Monterey Bay, CA? for how long? What language?

Will she be doing Cryptology or Signals Analysis for them after she graduates?
What other training will she get?
What is her commitment to the military after training?

If she doesn't have her bachelors degree yet? I would STRONGLY encourage her to get it and go in as an officer instead of enlisted. I've lived both sides of the coin. Officer is better, better pay. Better accommodations.

Where will she be stationed?

Are they guaranteeing her an MOS and assignment?

I can tell her NO to Minot - if she goes USAF - why not Minot? Freezin' the reason!! No kidding - freaking cold in North Dakota.

Good luck!

I don't think I could add much more than Wild Woman did.

I read it to Tyler and he pretty much said was she said. Go in as an officer. Tyler started out as enlisted, went to college on the Boot Strap program and went back as an officer. It was a HUGE change in salary for him and job responsibilities.

can't hurt to take the test, right?
talented linguists are in demand in all branches of the military, and a gazillion other places. my brother has made a great career in the foreign service by trading on his aptitude to learn new languages.
