Has anyone dealt with constant (and I mean every second of every day) nausea, throwing up and constipation (maybe from nausea medicine from the Doctor) in the first trimester? We are reading that there is a slight chance it might not change for the duration of the pregnancy. If any of you have dealt with these symptoms during pregnancy, and were able to do something to relieve them, please advise. Thank you.

I was like this for the first 5 months of my pregnancy with my twins. I took colace for the constipation. As for the nausea, I ate crackers before I got out of bed in the morning and I had crackers with me all day long. I also found that Pringles and Lemonade helped, which was weird because Lemonade always gave me stomach aches before I was pregnant. I am so sorry this is happening to you. I hope you get some great advice.

Hi Deb,

I had all-day nausea (thankfully no vomiting or constipation) with my first pregnancy for the first 5 mos and for 7 mos with my second pregnancy. It helped to always keep a little something in my stomach all the time, so I nibbled on saltines before getting out of bed and saltines and crystallized ginger throughout the day. Ginger helps the stomach empty faster, which is how it relieves nausea. Sucking on fresh lemons also helped. Be careful not to eat too much, though, because you don't want to gain too much weight (like I did!).

Keep up with a high fiber diet to reduce constipation: lots of fruits, vegies, and nuts. These provide excellent nutrition along with the fiber. You can also eat things like chia seeds and shiratake noodles, which are very high in fiber. For chia seeds, it's best to soak them in some kind of liquid for 1/2 hour or so before eating, as they swell. You can actually make a very lovely no-cooking-required pudding out of them that's similar to tapioca: soak 3/4 cup seeds in 2 cups milk-product of your choice (cow, goat, soy, almond, rice, hemp, etc., but keep away from raw, unpasteurized milks because of the risk of listeriosis) or juice for 1/2 hour, stir frequently to prevent clumping. Add in a little vanilla, flavorings of your choice and/or fruit and you have a really satisfying low-calorie, high fiber healthy snack. Chia is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, so it's also great for cardiovascular and neurological health for you and baby.

The other thing that really helped me with the nausea was not to keep anything tight around my waist, so I wore dresses only -- no pants or skirts. The nausea was also better if I got plenty of rest and a good 9 - 10 hours sleep each night. Remember -- you're growing a new person, and that takes a lot of energy!

I hope you're feeling better soon. Just keep thinking of the "prize" at the end of the process!

i had severe diarreha right before I found out that I was pregnant with my now four year old son. I also had an awful cold in my first trimester. I felt nausea but did not throw up. I was lucky that I did not have morning sickness. Most times by the time you reach 12-14 weeks you will feel a lot better. You need to keep in mind that your body is going through a lot changes hormonally. Your body basically will fight pregnancy for the first 12 weeks. Ginger is supposed to be good for morning sickness. I would say in regards to the nausea may be see if you feel better not taking the meds and try other things to help. god bless and good luck.

Sipping ginger ale helps me since it also helps me burp which tends to relieve the nausea without actually vomiting. There is also a possibility you are allergic to a component in your vitamins. Ask your doctor if you can take only the very essential vitamins separately for a week or 2 to see if it helps. I cannot process Niacin in pill form. An the iron in your vitamins can cause constipation. Before adding more meds it may be easiest to stop all meds/vitamins for a week under doctor's care to see if that makes you feel better. Good luck, and congratulations.

when i was pregnant with my second child, i had nausea and vomiting for about 5 months. i eventually took an anti-nausea med (the name escapes me right now...it's something that they give to chemo patients), but it made me so constipated that i chose to stop.

not sure what to tell you other than it WILL pass. talk to your doc about meds - it's worth a try.

good luck!

Yes I was like that plus I had migraines with both my pregnancies. Except I did not have constipation.

The ONLY thing that helped and stopped it completely, was Acupuncture.
Suggested by my OB/GYN.

A few things I learned was to eat something before I got our of bed. I would typically have a few crackers, or grapes that would help to level out my blood sugar.
I also used the sea sickness bands (which you can buy in any pharmacy) as well as sipped on ginger tea throughout the AM which was a suggestion from my acupuncturist.
Although I wasn't completely without nausea, it was considerably better.

I have never understood why they call it morning sickness. I always referred to mine as 24 hour sickness. I found that snacking and drinking water through out the day helped. Lollipops and ginger snaps were some of my favorites.

As far as constipation goes, does your prenatal vitamin have a stool softener? Also you can take miralax or collase.

I had the nausea and constipation (only occassional vomitting) during my first trimester and then the nausea/vomitting went away. Constipation stayed with me the entire pregnancy. Take colace for constipation.

For the nausea, I took a pill called Morning Sickness Magic (or Mother's Magic?) It is ginger-based and helped enormously! I found it initially at a speciality baby/maternity store, but I know that Henry's carries it, and you can also buy it online.

I was experienced all three, pretty much throughout both pregnancy. Not fun at all.

There was no overall relief for me, but the pregnancy pops (lollipops found @ a pharmacy), peppermints, & Jolly Ranchers helped with the nausea. Nothing helped with vomiting, I did it every morning, I just had to. I was never on meds, so for constipation, I just drank tons of water.

Hang in there & seek advice & help from your doc if needed. Trust me, when your sweet baby arrives, this will all be a very distant memory. :)

I had Hyperemises during my last pregnancy... Not something to take lightly if you think you might be having a rough time. I couldn't drink fluids I recieved all of my fluids via IV fluids for week 8-26 of pregnancy. It took a while till we figured out why I couldn't keep anything down. Zofran didn't help and I refused to get the zofran pump so ever day to every other day I got IV fluids. Fiber is very important to take for constipation. I just took fiber pills daily. If you have a true severe form of hyperemesis then the nausea and vomiting does not go away during pregnancy. It can get better but does not completely fade away :(

You can try what others say can help but don't get your hopes up that they will work. None of the traditional suggestions worked with my last...But you can try I sure did but in the end at 8weeks I realized that it was much more serious then a cracker or two in the morning and some ginger ale. There are different severities of Hyperemesis I had a very, VERY severe case but any amount of it can be horrible.

Hope you feel better soon. Hydration is the key but if you are like me any fluids in my tummy made me vomit so I had to resort to IV's

With my first child I went until about 18 weeks until my nausea went away. The second it was 22 weeks or so. It's horrible but on the bright side you know your baby is doing well!
A friend of mine gave me some medicated candy to suck on. Not sure of the brand - ask your doctor. SAVED me! If I was in public and feeling really bad I'd suck on one and it saved me from tossing my cookies in the street!
I also tried the motion sickness bracelet. Didn't work too well for me...about a day. Can get at the drug store. Puts pressure on your wrist and is supposed to help!
I found the hardest part was taking my prenatal vitamin during this phase. Only way I could get it down was to take with a smoothie or a really think juice like that V8 1/2 veg 1/2 juice drink.
For the constipation - lots of water, find high fiber food to eat and take some metamucil.
Hang in there! Believe it or not you forget this stage...that's why I had 2!!!

I found that munching on dry crackers helped with my nausea. My mom found olives helped for nausea when she was pregnant with my sister and carrot sticks with her last pregnancy. Unfortunately, it's trial and error until you find what works for you. I also found that the smell of cooking, strong perfumes, cigarette & cigar smoke or any other strong smell, would make my nausea worse. Don't worry too much about eating (baby is a perfect parasite, he/she will ensure he/she gets everything necessary for growth) even if you can't eat due to nausea. The ESSENTIAL thing is that you keep fluid intake up. Water, chamomile tea etc are all good. For constipation, I always start my day off (even now that my youngest is 15 yrs old!) with bran flakes and always have a water bottle with me. Drink as much water as possible - especially if you are vomiting. Most moms-to-be stop feeling nauseous after the 1st trimester. Best of luck to you! When the going gets tough just repeat to yourself "this too shall pass" ... because it does! :)

my advice would be to get off the meds!
medication exists to relieve symptoms and it sounds like your symptoms arent going away and youve got new ones! yikes.

nausea and vomiting are completely normal in pregnancy. especially in the first trimester. "morning sickness" is a misnomer! it lasts all day and night. although this depends on the woman and the pregnancy (i was different with all four of mine!)

a few ways to relieve nausea is to make sure you are snacking on healthy things, like fruits veggies, protein bars for women, water, etc. if that doesnt help try peppermint or raspberry teas, you can even ice them in the summer of course, its super delicious! another thing that worked for me is sugar free lolliops, when i didnt feel like eating something, those woked pretty well.

unfortunately this is one of those things that drs cant explain and (just about) every woman goes through this with her pregnancies.

Good luck! I hope you can manage until the 2nd trimester, hopefully it ends there, only rarely does it last longer.

what helped me was, i went to the motherhood maternity store, they gave me "preggy pops" those actually helped with the nausea, also if you like pickles, they helped with nausea as well, so does ginger, try drinking ginger tea, or at the chinese restaurant, they have shredded ginger you can chew. nothing helped me with constipation exept try eating more foods high in fiber. hope this helps :)

Well after 4 pregnancies, I can tell you that Standard Process' Linum B6 (not just any B6, since this one is flax based, so it stays in your system longer) and Nutrition Now's PB8 at night works WONDERS.

All of my friends who have had hyperemesis started on the Linum B6 and within 1-5 days, it was totally gone. All of them needed to increase the dosage untilt he symptoms were gone and then decreased it to find the right dosage for them.

Most OBs don't have enough nutritional info under their belt to help in this department. They can admit you to a hospital for an IV when it gets too bad, but until then, prevention is not their forte.

Good luck.
