I used the Cetaphil method for getting rid of lice on my daughter and myself (this was a just in case cause I can't search my own head!). It worked. It was recommended on here, her pediatrician and the health clinic all also recommended it. Google it. Very self explanatory and easy to do and safe!!

Tea Tree Oil works and it smells much better than mayo.

I have only heard of using mayo to soften hair and I don't know if even that works.

Any oil will drown the bugs. You can use vasaline, olive oil, vegetable oil. There's something bout the acid i mayo people swear by but years ago when I had roommates who worked with kids in the school district after rounds of lice shampoo didn't work, they put their hair in vasaline and wrapped it in plastic for three hours, then used a nit comb to brush out the eggs. And of course you have to deal with bedding and cushions properly as well as I"m sure you already know.

The mayo may suffocate the live bugs if you leave it in long enough, but it won't do anything about the eggs. If you miss even one egg and it hatches, the whole thing start again.

I used to use RID but it didn't work that well. The last time GD had it, we used Lice MD. It is all natural - no chemicals and it worked GREAT!

Vaseline - it's supposed to suffocate the lice.

My mother used to do Vinegar. I know it stinks but it suffocates the little boogers! She would use a very fine comb and rinse it in scalding hot water. I hated getting it too because of the smell but it took care of it!

She would have us lay right by the kitchen sink and soak our scalp in the vinegar and then take a fine comb and comb it all out. Then when she got most of them, she would wash the comb off in scalding hot water.

I bought a natural product at Walgreens (I think) that was called lice free. It was a spray with a metal comb in the box. It smeeled like licorice & worked great. Then since my daughter was still in daycare I sent her to school with lavendar conditioner in her hair up in a ponytail. They say lice likes really clean heads & lavendar is supposed to help.

No luck here with Mayo but if you can get your hands on Tea Tree oil you will not need anything else.

Well, if it's a boy - it's fairly easy to shave their head or give them a very close brush cut.
For a girl, this would be harder.
Some don't mind shaving their heads as a support for a family member with cancer, but for lice, they wouldn't do it.
Very short hair just makes it easy to deal with - there's less for the lice to hold on to and it's easy to comb through and it's easy to treat/wash.
Some say that a henna treatment will help get rid of lice.

I found this:

"Another belief is that covering the scalp with thick oil, Vaseline, mayonnaise, even peanut butter, can suffocate the lice. While this may be true, it would take hours to do so, and wouldn't harm any eggs. It's also pretty tough to remove afterwards. Certain essential oils—basil, rosemary, tea tree oil—have been alleged to have louse-killing properties. This hasn't been proven, however, and large amounts of some of these oils can harm small children.".

My niece recently had lice. Instead of going the chemical route, they hired a company that specializes in removing lice via the combing out method. The company used Eucalyptus Oil.
