1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar three times a day. You can mix with water. It really works. Or a cotton ball dipped in plain white vinegar also works well. But the smell takes a little getting used to. My daughter doesn't seem to mind at all though.

Vitamin b1 is awesome. I know this because as a child I was mosquito crack. I got bit all the time and had horrible allergic reactions. I spent days at a time looking like the elephan man because they always got me on my face. My grandma told my dad to try the b1 and we did. I took one a day and didn't get bit anymore. It was like magic.

If you can find vitamin b1 or a complex that has it in there in liquid form (ask your phamacist) then you are set.

Hope this helps

UPDATED: Also the Dollar General cells these citronella bracelets that are awesome and really work. My bf uses them during the summer. The look like the little bungee key cords or sprialed like old telephone cords used to be and they come in neon colors. She puts one on a wrist and one on an ankle and her kids are covered. When she doesn't use them she puts them in a tupperware or ziplock container with an air-tight lid and waits for the next time. She has had the same ones for three years.

Have you ever tried lemon balm? It's a highly invasive "herb". You can rub it on your clothes and it releases a lemony scent. Supposedly the mosquitoes really hate it.

We bought this DEET oil when on vacation, they also carry it at REI stores. Although it's not all natural, you can put just a drop! on a baseball hat, jacket hood or on your gym shoes and it lasts and lasts. The Adventure Guides use the same hats that have the co logo on them. They put Deet on once a month! And they are outside in nature all the time and have no problems. We use this on kids at festivals and outings so we don't have to worry about reapplying sprays and lotions. We have also put it on the corners of our "lawn blanket" and it seems to ward off all mosquitos in our area. (Note: WE NEVER USE IT ON SKIN!)

Yvette,
Shaklee has a cleaning product called Basic H. You may have seen it on Oprah. They don't market it for this use, but I works great. When my boys were small, I bathed them in it. I have bathed it for over 15 years. We have lots of mosquitioes and other biting insects here and we never get bitten.
B complex also helps.
It might just be me, but years ago I worked outside alot. I used the Avon skin so soft. After about a month, I started breaking out in a rash from it. I am not trying to put down Avon. They have some great products.
Another resource for checking product safety is http://www.ewg.org
If you want info on Basic H, let me know.

I don't have a specific answer for you, but here is a very good website to check anytime you have questions about the safety of products. I don't know if they have bug sprays on it, but it is worth a look. You look up product types and see which are safest. I know there have been several questions on here like that, but I can't find the one I had bookmarked. You could try doing a search and see what you find. But check the website first, it's really helpful.

I have to chime in for Avon Skin So Soft as well. I work at an outdoor theatre festival for a month each summer and I was the only one not being bitten. Now all the actors, tech crew, box office staff, everyone uses it, so I have to stock up! Both of my kids use it with no problems. I have very sensitive skin, but have no reaction to this.
If you don't have an Avon rep near you, their products can be ordered online usually with free shipping so it is super convenient and affordable. If you need a website url and free shipping code, just message me privately and I'll send it over.
Enjoy an itch-free summer!

My favorite bug spray is called, Herbal Armor. It works so good at keeping the bugs away and there is no DEET or chemicals…it’s all natural oils that actually smell good too! This stuff works camping, by the lake, at the cabin…EVERYWHERE! You can find it at Whole Foods or other natural co-ops.

Hi Yvette,

I make my own from natural products that I purchase online. They contain a high concentration of high grade tea tree oil which is a natural bug repellant. (It even kills and repels lice and ticks) Not only is it natural but is actually good for the skin. I agree with RM to go to the cosmeticsdatabase.com and look up some of the things suggested. Even though something is sold as a cosmetic or lotion doesn't mean it is actually safe.

What I mix together will last from the shower to the next shower I take...it does need to be reapplied after swimming but sweating usually doesn't seem to negate it's affects. This is not only safe for kids but for infants as well. If you'd like to get specifics, let me know. I'm glad to share.

Avon Skin so Soft is a great repellent. I used to bath my kids in every night. Its natural and the mosquitoes didn't bother them. You can also spray it on during the day as well.
Good luck!!

I am not sure if you're still looking, but I am a surpirse lady and have a product called Glisten After Shower Spray. I know it may sound kinda weird for a Surprise Lady to chime in on this subject, but this stuff is pretty neat. You spray it on yourseft after your shower (kids can use it too), then not only will it make your whole body feel soft (it's like putting on lotion without taking 20 minutes to do it), it smells really nice. It's a very light pear blossom scent that is anything from overpowering. And the ultimate added bonus....it works as a great mosquito repellent!

Let me know if you would like some.
